The mind behind Linux | Linus Torvalds - this video is great because it explains why 1) #geeks are strange and 2) what you need to be a *good* programmer

Linus Torvalds transformed technology twice — first with the Linux kernel, which helps power the Internet, and again with Git, the source code management system used by developers worldwide. In a rare interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Torvalds discusses with remarkable openness the personality traits that prompted his unique philosophy of work, engineering and life. "I am not a visionary, I'm an engineer," Torvalds says. "I'm perfectly happy with all the people who are walking around and just staring at the clouds ... but I'm looking at the ground, and I want to fix the pothole that's right in front of me before I fall in."

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: short video on the creator of Linux the operating system that powers most of the digital revolution. his explanation of the personal characteristics that made him great (stubborn, focus, lack people skills) are quite common in the tech world. For those inside my world, this is going to sound familiar. For others, it may help you understand a bit more your strange tech guy in the IT department...

The jobs of the future are growing faster than all jobs, but this does not mean transition will be painless via @Axios @Cognizant | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Maybe you didn't grow up dreaming of being an "augmented reality journey builder" or "master of edge computing" or a "cyber calamity forecaster." But someone will. Jobs of the future will be heavy on the use of algorithms, automation and AI; customer experience; environment; fitness and wellness; health care; legal and financial services; transport; and work culture.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: it looks like the new technologies that replace jobs at a rapid pace are also creating new ones at a faster pace. This may prevent dooms day scenarios where self-driving trucks make truck drivers useless for example. However, looking at the new jobs created the skills they require is very different from the one they replace (not sure truck drivers can master edge computing easily - or enjoy it). More disturbing some of the high growth jobs are low paying ones, such as elderly care workers. Change thus will be hurtful for many of the displaced.

How to prepare for the end of jobs #weekendReads from @MIT | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Robots are joining the workforce around the world. And their impact on jobs is inevitable.

The predictions can sound apocalyptic: millions and millions of jobs destroyed by automation, an entire working generation replaced at a stroke. But the actual number of jobs affected—while alarming—shouldn’t really be the entire focus of the conversation. The debate needs to shift. Yes, we know the robots are coming—so what are we going to do about it?

The future of work may be defined by companies such as @Buffer and include being a fully remote team, transparent salaries, and radically different hiring and performance reviews #HR #jobs

The future of work may be defined by companies such as @Buffer and include being a fully remote team, transparent salaries, and radically different hiring and performance reviews #HR #jobs | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

When you experiment with work culture as much as we do at Buffer, you tend to receive a lot of questions about it.

What is it like to work remotely? How do you collaborate across time zones? Do people really feel okay making their salaries public? Can you become friends with teammates when you’re not in an office? Do you miss working in an office? Do you basically live in pajamas? (Quick answer to that one: not usually, though I definitely have spent a work day or two in pajamas!)

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I wrote about the buffer open culture in the past and find this latest post to be a great summary of the best practice they have put in place over the years. Critics will say this only applies in startups but I would argue that 1) Buffer is already a 6+ years old 80 person team company 2) Large companies are composed of business units often much smaller in size than Buffer. That being said, many of my colleagues like coming to work in the morning and interacting with people face to face during the day so this model is not for everyone. But if you are looking for a different way to work, then I suggest you look at this and the new agile tribes that I wrote about previously.

What’s Squad? It’s a small cross-functional self-organized team with usually less than 8 people. They have end-to-end responsibilities and they work together toward long-term missions. On Squads, the key drive is autonomy.

Each Squad has autonomy to decide what to build, how to build it, and how to work together while building it, although they need to be aligned with the Squad mission, product strategy, and short-term goals.

“Be autonomous, but don’t sub-optimize!”.

McKinsey proposes to do away with outdated command-and-control structure in favour of unleashing the power of agile teams and explains that it requires executives and managers to change the way the... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In a nutshell, senior executives must move the company—and themselves—away from outmoded command-and-control behaviors and structures that are ill-suited to today’s rapid digital world. They must redouble efforts to overcome resource inertia and break down silos, because independent teams can’t overcome these bureaucratic challenges on their own. They must direct teams to the best opportunities, arm them with the best people, give them the tools they need to move fast, and oversee their work with a light but consistent touch.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the issues raised in this article I see with every corporation I work with. They want agility and flexibility but executives don't let go of out-dated corporate structures and governance. Ultimately, they end up blaming employees and partners when they fail to deliver in a competitive way. Every executive I meet from this point forward will receive a copy of this article!
