On It's 50th Anniversary, Here's the Internet's 'Birth Certificate' #forGeeks | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The point is if you really want to piece together a history from documents, get enough of them. Ask what had to have been accomplished for that particular document to have been made possible. Ask about the obvious stars and the hidden labor. Ask why the authors make a really big deal about [a] thing that might seem obvious to you but [doesn’t] even mention things you think to be exciting. Try to figure out what they saw themselves doing—it was [certaintly different] from how you see it. Do that enough times with enough documents and you’ll start to construct a reasonable history.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: biggest things always start small. In this case the Internet started with 2 computers and an operator on a data center typing on a terminal to remote login to the other machine using packet switching technology. Not sexy, unless you are a geek. I am.

Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms 2020 #DXP positions Adobe, Sitecore, Acquia as leaders - but you have to question whether you need or are ready for such technologies... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
A digital experience platform (DXP) is an integrated and cohesive piece of technology designed to enable the composition, management, delivery and optimization of contextualized digital experiences across multi-experience customer journeys.
A DXP can provide optimal digital experiences to a variety of customers, including consumers, partners, employees, citizens and students.
This technology can thrive in a digital business ecosystem via API-based integrations with adjacent technologies.
DXPs are applicable to business-to-consumer (B2C), business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-employee (B2E) use cases.
Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: with customer experience journeys and omni-channel integration the primary focus of marketing teams, web content management (WCMS) solutions are growing in scope to become digital experience platforms (DXP). Or so Gartner says. My recommendation is to be very critical as the implementation of those platforms become large-scale projects with impacts across many business units, leading to easier integration but often solutions you may not need or may not implement for years. Sometimes it is better to go with a smaller solution than a full fledged platform to deliver value short term, especially in less mature organizations...

Akamai state of internet reports that #retailers are most at risk of #credentialAbuse with 10B of the 28B attempts over 8 months in 2018 - and situation same in 2019 via Akamai Security Intelligenc... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Credential abuse and botnets abusing retailer inventories is a rising problem that needs attention. On average, organizations report experiencing 12.7 credential stuffing attempts each month, with each attempt targeting 1,252 accounts. We detected nearly 28 billion credential stuffing attempts between May and December 2018. Within the retail industry, the apparel vertical, experienced 3.7 billion attempts on its own, making it the largest targeted industry during the same timeframe. So why is retail, as well as apparel, such at hot target? Short answer? Money.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I find the number just huge and thus a cause for concern in the design of my systems, strategies and recommendations to my clients. I also include the definition of credential stuffing because 1) I did not know and 2) it shines a light into the power of having a global CDN network to perform those analyses...

2019 report: https://www.akamai.com/us/en/multimedia/documents/state-of-the-internet/soti-security-media-under-assault-report-2019.pdf

Credential abuse attempts were identified as unsuccessful login attempts for accounts using an email address as a username. In order to identify abuse attempts, as opposed to real users who can’t type, two different algorithms are used. The first is a simple volumetric rule that counts the number of login errors to a specific address. This differs from what a single organization might be able to detect because Akamai is correlating data across hundreds of organizations.
The second algorithm uses data from our bot detection services to identify credential abuse from known botnets and tools. A well-configured botnet can avoid volumetric detection by spreading its traffic amongst many targets, by using a large number of systems in its scan, or spreading the traffic out over time, just to mention a few countermeasures.

An analysis on the 2019 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management by Dries Buytaert raises interesting point: there are 2 real leaders, Adobe + Acquia | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In mature markets like Web Content Management, there is almost always a single proprietary leader and a single Open Source leader. There is Oracle and MongoDB. Splunk and Elastic. VMWare and Docker. Gitlab and Github. That is why I believe that next year it will be Acquia and Adobe at the very top of the WCM Magic Quadrant. Sitecore and Episerver will continue to fight for third place among companies who prefer a Microsoft-centric approach. I was not surprised to see Sitecore move down this year as they work to overcome technical product debt and cloud transition, leading to strange decisions like acquiring a services company.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this analysis is spot on. There are 2 main platforms for large enterprises, Adobe and Acquia. I find the rise of episerver in the Microsoft area, from an ecommerce company into a full web platform very much worth taking notice.

An Incremental Approach to Content Management Using Git - what happens when you let developers loose and ask them to build a CMS for your website #notMeantForGartnerMagicQuadrant via @thoughtWorks | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

One of the many challenges with building or refreshing a website is the selection of a Content Management System (CMS). Despite our best efforts the CMS can often be a source of difficulty in a project, but there are alternatives. Read about the approach we took on www.thoughtworks.com to developing functionality to support content management in an incremental fashion.

CONCLUSION

This article has detailed an incremental approach to developing a content managed web application, in contrast to the adoption of a CMS at the outset. While there are the costs associated with developing functionality which you could get “off the shelf,” these are offset by some of the advantage of this approach – flexibility, simplicity, control, obviating the need to learn a bespoke framework and above all being able to move in small steps from a simple static web site to a managed one.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is what happens when you ask developers to build a content management solution. Very good insights into the process though.

2019 Gartner Magic Quadrant for WCM Report reflects major trends where few large platforms dominate in a market full of niche solutions and challengers - not an easy choice to make

2019 Gartner Magic Quadrant for WCM Report reflects major trends where few large platforms dominate in a market full of niche solutions and challengers - not an easy choice to make | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
Gartner defines web content management (WCM) as the process of creating, managing and delivering content over one or more digital channels through the use of specific management solutions based on a core repository. These solutions may be procured as commercial products, open-source tools, cloud services or hosted services.
The functionality of WCM solutions goes beyond simply publishing webpages. It also includes:
  • Content creation functions, such as templating, workflow and change management
  • Repositories that organize and provide metadata about content
  • Library services, such as check-in/check-out, version control and security
  • Website management features, such as layout, menus and navigation
  • Content deployment functions
  • Personalization and analytics capabilities
  • The ability to integrate well, via APIs, with adjacent technologies such as digital commerce platforms, social media platforms, marketing automation platforms and broader digital experience platforms (DXPs)
  • Hybrid (traditional and headless) and pure headless capabilities for API-driven omnichannel content delivery
Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: quadrants are very interesting because they show progress year over year and provide insights into the market leaders and key trends. So take the included solutions and their relative position with a grain of salt, but read the content to understand how complex the world of web content management has become. Choice is difficult, at best.

Two Stack CMS approach describes a custom-built website creation solution designed by developers to be modern and full featured #rollYourOwnWCMS via @ThoughtWorks | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

We applied the editing-publishing separation
pattern in building a two-stack CMS to support a global
readership while supporting complex coordination of legacy
editing tools.

When content volume is low and only few trained people are responsible for content creation and maintenance, any added complexity of a two stack CMS isn't worthwhile. Such complexity makes it harder for content creators to learn how to use it and adds significant effort in system maintenance. (Although this may be mitigated by tools that are designed to work in this style.)

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: choosing a web content management solution is a pain in the neck. This approach does away with that altogether and builds its own versions. Very useful to understand the limitations of commercial CMS solutions.
