» | #MIT #Sharing #Collaboration  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Growth Mindset: A Driving Philosophy, Not Just a Tool

Growth Mindset: A Driving Philosophy, Not Just a Tool | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
It's important to recognize that a growth mindset is an overall paradigm for personal development rather than a pedagogical tool for measuring academic accomplishment.

5 Growth Mindset Practices

In their groundbreaking book, Professional Learning Communities at Work, Richard DuFour and Robert Eaker say it clearly when pointing out the issue that comes about when change initiatives are considered "a task to complete rather than an ongoing process." If we really want to improve our schools, our work, and the education of our students, we can do so by adopting a new mindset -- for everyone -- that would include:

  1. Being humble enough to accept that there are things about ourselves and our practices that can improve
  2. Becoming part of professional teams that value constructive critique instead of criticism
  3. Treating setbacks as formative struggles within the learning process instead of summative failures
  4. Realizing the restrictive role that timelines can play in reaching high standards, and using foundational philosophies such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to map systems so that everyone's growth is supported
  5. Create flexible grouping at all times so that nobody's trapped in any one course level or particular type of work.

To Advance Education, We Must First Reimagine Society | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Why haven't education reform efforts amounted to much? Because they start with the wrong problem, says John Abbott, director of the 21st Century Learning

"Any kid can read a textbook — they don't need a teacher standing over them telling them to do so. They need teachers to inspire them to think about things in a much bigger way than they've done before."

On a practical level, the most powerful lever for change, Abbott says, is people coming together to “rethink the role of community in the learning process,” agreeing how to divide up responsibilities among professional teachers and other community members, and then launching small pilot projects that are true to their new vision. These efforts will build on each other, he says, and large-scale change will follow.

20 Simple Assessment Strategies You Can Use Every Day | #Understanding #LEARNing2LEARN #FAQ'S | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The ultimate goal of teaching is understanding. But sometimes it’s easier to talk than to teach, as we all know, especially when we need to cover a lot of material in a short amount of time. We hope students will understand, if not now then before test time, and we keep our fingers crossed that their results will indicate we’ve done our job. The problem is, we often rely on these tests to measure understanding and then we move on. There isn’t always time to address weaknesses and misunderstandings after the tests have been graded, and by that time it’s too late for students to be interested.

Below are 22 simple assessment strategies and tips to help you become more frequent in your teaching, planning, and curriculum design.

Learning By Thinking: How Reflection Improves Performance — Harvard Business School

Learning By Thinking: How Reflection Improves Performance — Harvard Business School | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Gust MEES's insight:

Learning from direct experience can be more effective if coupled with reflection-that is, the intentional attempt to synthesize, abstract, and articulate the key lessons taught by experience.

Reflecting on what has been learned makes experience more productive.

Reflection builds one's confidence in the ability to achieve a goal (i.e., self-efficacy), which in turn translates into higher rates of learning.

I love infographics! Learn - create - collaborate!

Right 'up the alley' when addressing 21st century skills. I find particularly the "learn"-part interesting: the need for skills to "access, evaluate and use different forms of information, exihbit fluency with tech tools, and exercise critical thinking". Definately a focus relevant for my master´s thesis.
