It wasn’t too long ago that student use of “chatspeak” — texting shorthand, Internet slang, or even emoji — in the classroom seemed as if it might signal the end of grammar and the death of proper English. But with 78 percent of teenagers having access to cell phones, and the majority of children picking one up by age 12, chatspeak is here to stay.

Social Media is the New Normal for Educators | #ModernEDU #ICT | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The term “new normal” is the lingo used to describe drastic change in doing something or life after a major event. The change is usually
quick and immediate. It alters one’s approach to something or way of life. In the educational world a slower transition is happening that will create a new normal.  That change agent is social media. Social media has been around for some time but its practical use is relatively new to edu
cators. As I engage more and more educators in the use of social media for educational purposes I hear a lot of the same questions.

Why Content Curation Has Become a Vital Skill for Students | #PKM #PLN #SocialMedia

Why Content Curation Has Become a Vital Skill for Students | #PKM #PLN #SocialMedia | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

People often say things like, “the teacher is no longer the source of information now that students can curate it themselves.” This is typically accompanied by the term “guide on the side” to describe a teacher’s role.

While I see some validity in this sentiment, I think it proves that now more than ever, teachers need to be curators. They need to be geeking out on their subjects. They need to help students figure out where to go. Yes, they might be “on the side,” but they are still guides, helping students navigate the terrain for the first time ever. And that’s precisely what a curator does. We curate so that we can help students learn the art of content curation.

Manuela Mejia's curator insight, September 19, 2016 9:42 PM
In my opinion, this article is very interesting since it gives a complete definition of who is a curator. A curate is a person who goes beyond the information, is someone who searches, selects, organize and manages information and finds the way to explain to other people through a jargon that is understandable for almost everyone. As teachers in development, we need to learn how to grow students in wisdom but also teach them how to connect the information they consume. Nowadays students are faced a technological era in which not all the information is relevant or necessary in the academic field, so as teachers we help students to used appropriated the benefits that technology gives them.

Social learning: the revolution in eLearning

Social learning: the revolution in eLearning | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
How can an age-old learning strategy, like social learning, make your eLearning course pop? Read this article and find out the benefits of social learning!

What is Social Learning?

Before we delve into the benefits of this type of learning, we need to understand what research in social learning tells us.

Social learning theory: The social learning theorists Bandura and Walters have described this theory as follows:

· Learning is not purely behavioral; rather, it is a cognitive process that takes place in a social context. This points to the learners’ preference to learn in groups. The interchange of knowledge and perspective creates new knowledge that is personal to the learner.

· Learning can occur by observing a behavior and by observing the consequences of the behavior (vicarious reinforcement).

· Learning involves observation, extraction of information from those observations, and making decisions about the performance of the behavior (observational learning ormodeling). Thus, learning can occur without an observable change in behavior.

· Reinforcement plays a role in learning, but is not entirely responsible for learning.

· The learner is not a passive recipient of information. Cognition, environment, and behavior all mutually influence each other (reciprocal determinism).

We use it for every part of our lives – in our personal relationships, for entertainment, at work and in our studies. To put it into some context, every minute we collectively send more than 30 million messages on Facebook and almost 350,000 tweets.

6 Clever Ways Marketers Can Use Twitter Moments to Tell Their Brand's Story

6 Clever Ways Marketers Can Use Twitter Moments to Tell Their Brand's Story | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Twitter rolls out Moments to all users. Here's how to use it to engage your followers.

Twitter seems to be making a series of user-friendly moves to reignite the stagnant growth on the platform and keep pace with other competitors like Instagram and Snapchat, both of whom have powerful storytelling features.

After finally enabling longer tweets earlier last month, Twitter's latest move was to roll out Moments to all users. Previously only selected users and influencers were able to use the feature.

Moments make it easy for users to create a slideshow of curated tweets that marketers can use to tell a story about their brand in a colorful and attractive way.

Twitter makes it easy to curate content and string together tweets for Moments. Users can share a wide variety of content you can display in a Moment from videos, GIFs, links, photos, and infographics, to help tell their stories.

Tweets can be pulled from any account, hashtag, or keyword search and easily added to create a Moment.

To learn how to get started telling your brand's story by watch this short video from Twitter.

It's important to develop relationships with your customers, so if you are pitching to a new follower or fan, you're missing the point. Asking your customers questions and engaging is a great way to better the customer experience. Doing poor automation such as blasting direct messages to followers also shows you're not putting in enough effort to connect with clients.

How teachers can use Twitter in education?

Twitter is thought to be a social networking platform where individuals share their thought and connect with the entire world including the aspiring things they aim for. You can be quite surprised after coming to know that Twitter has marvellous opportunities to co- function with teachers making a paradigm in the education sector and beyond.

Some people think that social networks are not suitable for academic purposes; however, what this article suggests is that teachers can encourage students to use Twitter as a learning platform in which learners and teachers share information about topics related with the academic field. As a teacher in development, I think that we can use almost all the tools that technology gave us, but it is very important that first we teach students how to use them. It is also important that teachers use personal and professional account since you do not want that students know things about your personal life, or maybe you do not want that you family and friends follow things related with their job.

I consider that teachers can create an special section in which students talk about the Tweets that are interesting for them, or maybe make an activity like a reading circle, a debate or a speech in which the students get extra points because it helps that students focus on reading the suggested material and not only looking for the profile accounts of their friends.

To do better in school, kids should exercise their bodies as well as their brains, experts say | #Sports #EdPhys

To do better in school, kids should exercise their bodies as well as their brains, experts say | #Sports #EdPhys  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Attention parents: If you’d like to see your kids do better in school, have them close their books, set down their pencils and go outside to play.

That’s the latest advice from an international group of experts who studied the value of exercise in school-age kids.

“Physical activity before, during and after school promotes scholastic performance in children and youth,” according to a new consensus statement published Monday in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

What’s more, exercise and fitness “are beneficial to brain structure, brain function and cognition,” the experts concluded.

The group of 24 researchers from the United States, Canada and Europe came up with this advice after poring over the latest scientific and medical research on the benefits of exercise in kids ages 6 to 18. The experts, from a variety of disciplines, gathered in Copenhagen this spring to assess the value of all kinds of exercise, including recess and physical education classes in school, organized youth sports leagues and old-fashioned outdoor play.

Though all of these activities take kids out of the classroom or away from their homework, they are still a good investment in academic achievement, the consensus statement says. Even a single break for moderate-intensity exercise can boost “brain function, cognition and scholastic performance,” according to the statement.

The benefits also extend to the psychological and social realm, the experts wrote. Exercise will clear their heads, help them make friends, and help them feel more confident around their peers as well as coaches and other adults.

Any kind of exercise is valuable, but goal-oriented activities provide extra benefits, the experts found. Among other things, they promote “life skills” and “core values” like respect and social responsibility, they wrote in the statement.
