Raspberry Pi or Arduino? One Simple Rule to Choose the Right Board | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Coding

Raspberry Pi or Arduino? One Simple Rule to Choose the Right Board | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Coding | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Here at Make: we see new, ingenious projects from our community every day. Many of these are made possible by the use of development boards. However, if you’re new to the subject, it can be confusing to parse out the differences between boards and the advantages of using one over another.

We’ve created this super simple guide to help you get started. Then, when you’re ready check out Arduino Uno and Raspberry Pi Starter Kits, which come with all the goodies you need for your inaugural projects. Not sure you want all those peripherals yet? Start with the essentials: Grab the board of your choice and bring yourself up to speed with our Getting Started With series for Arduino and for Raspberry Pi.

Is there a simple rule of thumb to help me decide?

Yes, there is! Think about what you want your project to do. If you can describe it with less than two ‘and’s, get an Arduino. If you need more than two ‘and’s, get a Raspberry Pi.

Examples:
“I want to monitor my plants and have them Tweet me when they need water.” That can best be done by an Arduino.

“I want to monitor my plants and have them Tweet me when they need water and check the National Weather Service, and if the forecast is for fair weather, turn on the irrigation system and if the forecast is for rain, do nothing.” That would best be handled by a Raspberry Pi.

Isn’t that rule of thumb oversimplifying what is actually a much more complex issue?

Yes. That’s what a rule of thumb is.

Look, this is confusing! Just tell me which one I should buy!

An Arduino. It’s a system designed for beginners.

7 skills your child needs to survive the changing world of work | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Education may be the passport to the future, but for all the good teaching out there, it would seem that schools are failing to impart some of the most important life skills, according to one educational expert.

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues that today’s school children are facing a “global achievement gap”, which is the gap between what even the best schools are teaching and the skills young people need to learn.

This has been exacerbated by two colliding trends: firstly, the global shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy, and secondly, the way in which today’s school children – brought up with the internet – are motivated to learn.

In his book The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner identifies seven core competencies every child needs in order to survive in the coming world of work.

1. Critical thinking and problem-solving

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence

3. Agility and adaptability

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism

5. Effective oral and written communication

6. Accessing and analysing information

Also: Warum nicht einmal etwas Selbstgebasteltes?

. . in drei Schritten zum smarten Maker | #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Coding | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Was braucht der Erfinder von morgen? Ganz einfach …

Sensoren und Aktoren
Mikrocontroller (Arduino, Intel & co.)
Software (Arduino IDE, C++, Phyton & co.)
Werkzeuge (Multimeter, Lötkolben, usw.)
Grundlagen Wissen

kleine Roboter & Dronen bauen

Introduction: DIY Distance Meter With Arduino and a Nokia 5110 Display

In this tutorial we are going to see how to build a very useful Distance meter with a big Nokia 5110 LCD display using Arduino. Easily measure the distance from your Arduino and build interesting devices with this project!

Building a distance meter is a great learning experience. When you finish building this project you will have a better understanding of how the ultrasonic distance sensor works, you will know how to wire a Nokia 5110 lcd display and you are going to see in action how powerful the Arduino platform can be. With this project as a base and the experience gained, you will be able to easily build more complex projects in the future.

We can use this project to measure the distance index in Real Time so we can use it in my projects

Without any further delay, let's get started!

10 Tools for Your Students’ Creativity Toolbox | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing

10 Tools for Your Students’ Creativity Toolbox | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.” —Edward de Bono

When I write an article, I usually draft two or three versions before I find the one I call the first draft. Creating an article requires exploring what I want to say and how I want to say it for my audience. I tell my children and students that the best writing begins during the revisions.

Creativity does not just occur in the arts—it happens within engineering design, policy making, problem solving, game strategizing, and especially lesson planning. And it’s a process that takes many forms, from conceiving an idea to shaping thoughts into something tangible to polishing a draft. During the process, there are likely many redos, as each draft and conversation inspires a new take on the idea, which may sharpen the picture of one’s creation.

It’s a mistake to believe that creativity is an inherent ability that some people have in plenty while others have little. Those are the thoughts of either self-doubters or people who struggle with explaining how to be creative. There are people who are gifted with a natural attunement to creative thinking, just as there are gifted athletes, scientists, and teachers, but dedicated study and practice can hone one’s creativity.

“Creativity is the process of having original ideas that have value. It is a process; it’s not random.” —Ken Robinson

Creativity is a fluid and flexible process. Sometimes the best way to make something new is to muck around. Accept that the first, second, or nth round or draft may not be what is wanted. It’s a messy process. In the act of doing, we find pieces that become the foundation of the product that is eventually shaped.
