The answer: in more ways than you could imagine. While Skype was not designed as an educational tool, it’s quickly becoming one as teachers discover the many ways it enriches their lessons and the lives of their students. Even something as simple as hosting a guest speaker through a video call can add excitement to a lesson.

Skype is a great tool to use in learning as it provides real time engagement with experts. This a great article with ideas about thinking outside of the box when integrating Skype.

Microsoft recently showcased a new Skype feature that allows for real-time, two-way, voice translation! This feature will make the Skype Cultural Exchange even more extensible and will allow those who use Skype for non-native language acquisition to have in-depth conversations, in their own languages, about their progress and issues in their learning.

Skype Translator était annoncé en version bêta pour la fin de l'année 2014. Une arrivée qui semble se confirmer avec l'annonce sur le blog de Skype de l'ouverture des inscriptions afin de pouvoir tester l'efficacité de cette technologie. Cette phase de test n'est pour le moment accessible que sous Windows 8.1 (ordinateur ou tablette), mais Microsoft prévoit de l'étendre à l'ensemble des plateformes dans le futur.

Today we’re pleased to release version 3.1 of Skype for modern Windows which comes with the ability to edit messages and a few more improvements. To edit a message, select the message you want to edit or remove, by tapping on it or right clicking with your mouse to highlight the text you want to remove.

We have seen tremendous interest and enthusiasm for Skype Translator from around the globe over the last few months and we’re incredibly excited to share it with the world. However, we want to hear from you first! The preview program will have limited spots available, so register today for your chance to secure a virtual spot in line!

The preview program will be free and will initially be available for Windows 8.1 computers and tablets only, and will kick-off with a limited selection of languages. That said, as part of the sign-up process, you’ll have the chance to tell us which languages are important to you, what platforms you’d like to see added, and how you plan to use Skype Translator once it becomes available.
