7 skills your child needs to survive the changing world of work | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Education may be the passport to the future, but for all the good teaching out there, it would seem that schools are failing to impart some of the most important life skills, according to one educational expert.

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues that today’s school children are facing a “global achievement gap”, which is the gap between what even the best schools are teaching and the skills young people need to learn.

This has been exacerbated by two colliding trends: firstly, the global shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy, and secondly, the way in which today’s school children – brought up with the internet – are motivated to learn.

In his book The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner identifies seven core competencies every child needs in order to survive in the coming world of work.

1. Critical thinking and problem-solving

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence

3. Agility and adaptability

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism

5. Effective oral and written communication

6. Accessing and analysing information

7. Curiosity and imagination

I think, as educators, we need to stop talking change. We need to stop talking revolution, or reform, or transformation, or evolution or any of those other words that basically say what we’re doing isn’t working.

We need to set common goals and then use what we know about teaching and learning to reach those goals.

It’s not about test scores.

It’s not about reading and writing and ‘rithmetic–or coding, or tinkering, or making or technology. It’s about LEARNING… and COMPREHENDING… and ANALYZING… and EVALUATING… and CREATING… and THINKING… and using the habits of mind that support critical thinking, reacting thoughtfully, doing and sharing.

It’s about  being a thoughtful, productive, responsible member of the society we call the human race.

How To Prepare Students For 21st Century Survival

===> As educators, we constantly strive to prepare our students for the ‘real world’ that exists around them. <===

We teach them how to read, write, and calculate. Then, of course, there are the less tangible skills we teach; such as how to work in a team, think critically, and be curious about the things they encounter each day.

The Critical 21st Century Skills Every Learner Needs and Why | #ModernEDUcation #ModernLEARNing

The Critical 21st Century Skills Every Learner Needs and Why | #ModernEDUcation #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Preparing a child for the world that doesn’t yet exist is not an easy task for any teacher. Step back and look at that picture from a broad perspective. What are the critical 21st-century skills every learner needs to survive and succeed in our world? What abilities and traits will serve them in a time that’s changing and developing so rapidly?

They want to be challenged and inspired in their learning. They want to collaborate and work with their peers. They want to incorporate the technology they love into their classroom experiences as much as they can. In short, they have just as high a set of expectations of their educators as their educators have of them.

How Are Educators Responding?

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, (ACARA), have identified the following as the General Capabilities they see as essential for learners:

Critical and creative thinking

Personal and social capability

Ethical understanding

Intercultural understanding

Information and communication technology capability

Literacy

Numeracy

Hence the trend being many organisations and practitioners not endorsing American based approaches and either creating their own locally as well as those of Europe, Asia and Middle East many of which are currently producing better economic outcomes.

Exploring education: Project Based Learning – meaningful action … or merely activity?

Exploring education: Project Based Learning – meaningful action … or merely activity? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The world is awash with people and groups wishing to reform education.  Some want to go “back to basics” while others want to go “forward to the future”.

Amongst the more progressive groups there is a surprising degree of similarity in what they propose. Thus, the RSA “Opening Minds” project in the UK or the US based P21 or the Apple Classroom of Tomorrow Today all have a high degree of overlap - indeed a Venn diagram of their views would be almost a single circle.

edrethink | Education Rethink: Is Creativity the Next Essential Literacy? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

I do believe that creativity is an essential literacy for education.  The only real solution to our education crisis and removing the need for this post is that policy makers begin to make time in education for educators to allow children to use their imagination and creativity.  Although assessment is great to inform instruction, let’s stop making them all paper and pencil multiple guess tests.

Don't Forget Professional Development for Students

Don't Forget Professional Development for Students | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Teachers spend countless hours learning new tools to use in class, but do they set aside any time for students to learn these new tools as well?

Gust MEES: I said this already years ago and I used it also with adults, seniors + kids and it's working well! Just show them one of the tools YOU are using, tell them it's your secret tool (it makes them curious...) and explain how it works and then give them a challenge to do it better...  You will engage them and the challenge will bring out a lot of creativity... BUT, don't make a time limit, give them the time they need to work it out...

Tip: read the books of Howard GARDNER "Multiple Intelligences" + "5 Minds for the future" as also books from Daniel GOLEMAN about Emotional Intelligence and YOU will understand...

In one phrase: make a win-win situation with your learners, show them your "secret" Educational Tools and use them to engage your learners, they will learn "BETTER" ;) Best would be to make your own curation and share it with them, but also to ask your learners to create also in parallel their own curation about it...
