This Is the Most In-Demand Skill of the Future

This Is the Most In-Demand Skill of the Future | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
As the world fills with more sophisticated AI and ubiquitous technology, human skills--compassion, empathy, etc.--will define the competitive edge of workers and entire organizations. So those interested in thriving in a high-tech world must put renewed prioritization on emotional intelligence and soft skills.

Soft skills represent the top three missing skills of job applicants according to the Society of Human Resource Management's (SHRM) 2019 State of the Workplace.

Top 6 Missing Skills in Job Applicants

Problem-solving, critical thinking, innovation, and creativity (37 percent)

Ability to deal with complexity and ambiguity (32 percent)

Communication (31 percent)

Trade skills (carpentry, plumbing, welding, machining, etc.) (31 percent)

Data analysis / Data science (20 percent)

Science / Engineering / Medical (18 percent)

The significance of developing and applying social and emotional skills is growing. Soft skills are twice as predictive of a student's academic achievement as home environment and demographics and 30-40 percent of jobs in growth industries require soft skills. Additionally, 57 percent of leaders say soft skills are more important than hard skills.

Dr. Deborah Brennan's curator insight, April 2, 2015 9:45 AM

The academic achievement gap in poverty schools coupled with the pressure of school ranking based upon standardized tests causes many educators to focus mainly on the academic needs of students.  many of our poverty students lack the Emotional Intelligence that provides an avenue for academic success.  We must build an awareness of emotional intelligence and then build this in our students just as we build their cognitive intelligence

Denver Leigh Watson, M.Ed, LDTC's curator insight, April 2, 2015 11:26 AM

How does this fit into your leadership framework? Do your arrows flow in the same direction? Does it matter? I believe self-management is the key to the flow, impact, and goal of change for leadership. For me, this is box #1 ... where's yours?

Empathy

Empathy

Empathy is the capacity to recognize emotions that are being experienced by another sentient or fictional being. One may need to have a certain amount of empathy before being able to experience accurate sympathy or compassion. The English word was coined in 1909 by the psychologist Edward B.

Jennifer Clark's curator insight, February 3, 2014 10:45 PM

My grandfather had nothing and worked into his 80's.  He lead my family. Jane Goodall is a leader in saving the wild life.  I am very involved in that.  Henri Matisse was a leader in simplicity in Art; it doesn't have to be detailed to get the point across. I think President Bill Clinton was the best leader the US has seen as he helped college students and eliminated our deficit.  CHef Gordon Ramsey is an amazing leader although he runs with an iron fist, he commands respect and excellence in his kitchen.

Six Leadership Styles by Daniel Goleman

Six Leadership Styles by Daniel Goleman | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Daniel Goleman, in his article “Leadership That Gets Results”, has identified six different leadership styles, and he believes that good leaders will adopt one of these six styles to meet the needs of different situations.

None of the six leadership styles by Daniel Goleman are right or wrong – each may be appropriate depending on the specific context. Whilst one of the more empathetic styles is most likely to be needed to build long-term commitment, there will be occasions when a commanding style may need to be called upon, for example, when a rapid and decisive response is required.

The Hidden Barrier To Learning And What You Can Do About It

There is a hidden barrier that prevents people from learning - emotions. Instructional designers that fail to take into account the emotional barriers learners face will find their courses met with resistance. It’s important to account for emotions in the design process.

Lindsay Ahmann's curator insight, January 11, 2014 4:28 PM

This article shows a very interesting view of how emotional intelligence can be good and bad at the same time. It can be bad because people will focus mainly on that and it isn't their main task, but it can help in the way that they will know when something can be threatening the well-being of another friend/ co-worker. Being able to critically analyze someone's emotions can be hard because you won't always be right and it can be understood differently.
