As most of you know already, I am an autodidact, a person who is learning on its own. I can choose WHAT to learn, WHEN to learn, in WHICH order I learn the different topics and HOW quick I will learn! AND especially WHERE I will learn; not necessary in a school, BUT online and from books!
That is what makes me learning very quick and to understand it also! As I am getting asked very often (people are astonished about…), so I decided to write this blog post to give some TIPS...

Is is possible that every learner is a potential autodidact or should that term be reserved for a rare breed of learner throughout history? Have you ever heard people refer to themselves or others as autodidacts? Today I hear quite a few people describe themselves this way as if it were a largely genetic trait like having blue eyes or being a certain height. “Some people are autodidacts,” they explain. “Others are genetically predisposed to depend upon others for their learning throughout life,” they seem to suggest. Others use the term “autodidact” as interchangeable with genius. Still other people reserve the word for the few and rare people throughout history like Michelangelo or Leonardo Da Vinci. Yet, perhaps there is value in keeping our minds open to a broader understanding of what it means to be an autodidact, recognizing the potential in every learner and helping people bring out their inner auto-didacticism. Dr. Bernard Bull is Assistant Vice President of Academics for Continuing and Distance Education & Associate Professor of Education at Concordia University Wisconsin. In 1888, John Milton Gregory published The Seven Laws of Teaching, providing instruction on what contributes to being an effective teacher. While this list is over a hundred years old, most readers today will resonate with this list of laws. This is one of a dozen or so books that I try to read each year. It is a short read that one can usually finish in a few hours. As I picked up the book to read again today, I started to think about these laws in terms of self-directed learning, rewriting the laws from a self-directed learning perspective (which, by the way, fits nicely with law #7). Below is the original list of “elements” from which Gregory devised his seven laws. This could be helpful for an educator as a checklist when developing a lesson plan to ensure that the way the lesson is set out and implemented builds on a students ability to a become self directed learner.

Is the one-size-fits-all, top-down classroom a misfit for the Digital Age?
Standards-based education is ruining the way educators teach and children learn. Education should not be about teaching to the next level in education and vocation and yet, that is exactly what our current school system is designed to do.
Our goal should be to foster a love of learning for learning sake. Learning is not something that we should force onto our children to ensure they go to college and get a good job. True learning is intrinsically motivated and the reward is knowledge.

I also think there is no limit to using technology in the classroom. I think every student learns differently and integrating technology in the classroom can help students find new means of studying that works well for them. I agree that teaching students to test them all the the same level is not the way to go about it. I think that it is "destroying our youth" and causing them to be high anxiety.

For many curious folks, their impassioned yearning to soak up as much of the world’s wonders as possible completely transcends the boundaries of a traditional classroom. Armed with an insatiable lust for knowledge, they set out to acquire it on their own terms, although a few pointers obviously can’t hurt before departure and landing!
Not every possible technique will necessarily stick with all self-motivated learners, of course, but the only way to find out is to test them. Try some of the following and experiment with what works in a more independent educational setting.

As some are raised a Catholic or an atheist or a vegetarian, I was raised an academic. The university always had about it a mystique, a cloud of mystery and veneration. Lauded in my household were the values of objectivity, critical thinking, close reading. As early as the fourth grade, my mother took me to her college Shakespeare classes, introduced me to her professors, and indulged me with lunch at the student union. I attended classes with her throughout her undergraduate study; and for years after, I’d walk through campus simply to absorb the essence of the place. Today, I am as much in love with the endeavor of higher education as I am disappointed by its outcomes.

My Thoughts: You can't teach someone how to learn. You can give them helpful tips and advice, but a single structure for education is not going to work for everyone. It's so much harder for people to learn their true potential, to reach their goals, when they're only shown a single path to them. You show them the path through the forest, but what if there's a rock face nearby that also leads up to where they want to go, and what if they happen to be a fantastic rock climber? It just makes more sense to show someone a map if you can, instead of directing them towards only one path.
