Microsoft’s smart mat project could blend Lego and Minecraft together « Adafruit Industries – Makers, hackers, artists, designers and engineers! | #AR #NFC #Coding #MakerED #MakerSpaces  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Microsoft has unveiled its latest research project today, Project Zanzibar. It’s a smart mat that’s designed to blend the digital and physical worlds by sensing touch, gestures, and objects. A team of researchers, with a love of toys, created the project at Microsoft’s research labs in the UK. The mat folds and combines sensing, near field communication (NFC), and multi-touch to imagine a future where you could place objects on this smart mat and play games.

Microsoft’s video (above) demonstrates a number of different games that track the position, movement, and orientation of objects — all thanks to NFC stickers. The smart mat, that reminds me of the Surface Music Cover, can even detect inputs like button presses, and works with existing devices via Bluetooth. While the software maker demonstrates basic games for learning, programming, and augmented reality, this looks like the perfect hardware to combine the company’s Minecraft game with real-world Lego blocks. Objects can be easily tagged with NFC stickers, so you could stack them and have the mat translate that physical object into Minecraft.

Microsoft is developing blockchain tech that lets you manage your digital identity | #Privacy  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Microsoft is out to prove blockchain naysayers wrong. In an effort to show the potential of the technology beyond its applications in cryptocurrency, the Redmond giant has announced plans to use blockchain tech as the foundation for storing and processing digital identity data.

Following a collaboration with the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF), Microsoft has revealed its plans to rely on blockchain technology to solve some of the challenges we face when managing our identities and personal data digitally, such as improving privacy and security across the physical and digital world.

“We believe it is essential for individuals to own and control all elements of their digital identity,” the company said in a blog post. “Rather than grant broad consent to countless apps and services, and have their identity data spread across numerous providers, individuals need a secure, encrypted digital hub where they can store their identity data and easily control access to it.”

To this end, the company is developing an off-chain solution – akin to the Lightning Network – that will allow it to process massive volumes of ID data without congesting the blockchain network.

It's good to see big companies start to see the power of the blockchain logic beyond the overly advertized cryptocurrencies. The tech needs to be improved, but its potential for legal applications (smart contracts, digital citizenship, etc...) is real.

And in my opinion, it's the most interesting part of blockchain.

The need for urgent collective action to keep people safe online | #Cyberattacks #CyberSecurity #Updates  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Early Friday morning the world experienced the year’s latest cyberattack. Starting first in the United Kingdom and Spain, the malicious “WannaCrypt” software quickly spread globally, blocking customers from their data unless they paid a ransom using Bitcoin. The WannaCrypt exploits used in the attack were drawn from the exploits stolen from the National Security Agency, or NSA, in the United States. That theft was publicly reported earlier this year.

In Europe Digital Skills Matter: An Interview with Telecentre Europe Managing Director, Gabriel Rissola

In Europe Digital Skills Matter: An Interview with Telecentre Europe Managing Director, Gabriel Rissola | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Young people and children may know how to operate devices but are not necessarily prepared to think digitally. The idea that the new generations are all “digital natives” is a fallacy. Interestingly, the school is now considered as THE place that should undertake the mission to prepare them for the challenges of the digital-by-default society in which they will live. But schools are not ready yet. For example, when one of my daughters recently started secondary school she was immersed in a new pedagogic model that is based on the use of a handheld device instead of books. The model came from a partnership with the industry and counted with the support of the school principal. Although I welcomed the initiative, I soon noticed a mix of new and old ways of teaching that weakened its effectiveness. The intention was great but it was not accompanied by an adequate preparation of teachers to act as learning facilitators. This is one of the major challenges for schools, in my view.

When we think of young people today we also deal with another contradiction. Many of them are unemployed; with some regions in Europe where as far as one out of two youths are unemployed. But at the same time, digital skills are increasingly demanded by the labour market (there will be about 825,000 ICT vacancies in EU by 2020). We tend to think that young people automatically have these skills. But they don’t. Therefore, digital literacy is becoming as important as traditional literacy and numeracy. Digital literacy is not only about the ability to use office or social media tools. It also implies understanding the logic behind it- what some call “computational thinking”- and this can be acquired, for example, by coding.

Another problem, as pointed out by many experts, is the lack of students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and this will only make the skills gap deeper. STEM studies are apparently not fashionable. So we need to make them more appealing, for example, by adding topics such as Arts or Creativity to stimulate interest and innovation in these fields. We can also work on better aligning university career plans to the labour market demands and expectations.

Raspberry Pi simulator lets you start tinkering without even owning a Pi | #Coding #MakerED | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
If you want to build your own gadgets using the Raspberry Pi but don't have the kit or even a Pi, there could soon be another way to get started.

Microsoft is building an online Raspberry Pi simulator that allows users to write code to control emulated hardware, and that currently lets users interact with an LED and collect data from a sensor.

The simulator shows a graphic of a Pi wired to a combined humidity, temperature, pressure sensor and a red LED via a breadboard, a plug board that allows circuits to be wired together rapidly. Users can type in a side panel to enter Node.js JavaScript code, which can be used to control the LED and collect dummy data from the simulated sensor. That code can be executed using a command line at the base of the panel.

Mais alors que certains rapports ne se concentrent que sur l’environnement Microsoft, les menaces sont bien présentes sur Linux, MacOS et les équipements Android, et moins bien appréhendées.
