Explore Technology industry trends & insights from TMT Predictions 2013. Watch videos, listen to podcasts, download reports, and more. Deloitte predicts that in 2013 more than 90 percent of user-generated passwords, even those considered strong by IT departments, will be vulnerable to hacking.
Inadequate password protection may result in billions of dollars of losses, declining confidence in Internet transactions and significant damage to the reputations of the companies compromised by attacks.
As the value of the information protected by passwords continues to grow, attracting more hack attempts, high-value sites will likely require additional forms of authentication.

We also encourage you, for your own personal data security, to consider changing password(s) on any other sites on which you use the same or similar password(s). You have a secret that can ruin your life. It’s not a well-kept secret, either. Just a simple string of characters—maybe six of them if you’re careless, 16 if you’re cautious—that can reveal everything about you. Thanks to an explosion of personal information being stored in the cloud, tricking customer service agents into resetting passwords has never been easier. ===> All a hacker has to do is use personal information that’s publicly available on one service to gain entry into another. <=== Big THANKS to my online friend Kevin https://twitter.com/kevin_corbett for having shared this link with me Read more, a MUST: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/11/ff-mat-honan-password-hacker/all/

A study by Ofcom, the UK communications watchdog, has unearthed some appalling statistics which reveal just how badly the general public treat password security. 55% of net users use the same password for most, if not all, websites. When will they learn?
There is a lot of interesting discussion going on at the moment across the interwebs on the intention of the latest string of Brute Force attacks, much of which That finding comes from Arbor Networks, which said that attackers had compromised numerous PHP Web applications, such as Joomla, as well as many WordPress sites, many of which were using an outdated version of the TimThumb plug-in. After compromising the sites, attackers then loaded toolkits onto the sites that turned them into DDoS attack launch pads. – Information Week Security

Evernote, the online note-taking service, has says that it has suffered a serious security breach which saw hackers steal usernames, associated email addresses and encrypted passwords. What's not good news is that the hackers now have access to the usernames and email addresses of Evernote customers. It is easy to imagine how this information could be abused - for instance, the hackers could send out spam emails to those users claiming to come from Evernote, and trick them into visiting a malicious website.
Are passwords dead? According to Wired's Mat Honan, they ought to be. Honan is the technology journalist who was hacked last year. In just a few minutes, his entire digital life, including photos of his young daughter, disappeared. If it can happen to a tech-savvy writer like Honan, it can happen to anyone.
