Teaching Teachers to Tweet (Part II)

Teaching Teachers to Tweet (Part II) | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The theme of Teaching Teachers to Tweet Part I was this: Don't just teachers teachers to use the functions of Twitter; teach them how to read the language of Twitter and follow community conventions and then give them specific ideas about how to use this tool for meaningful learning.

To some extent, that resonates with the central message of every post on this blog about teacher professional development: don't just talk about technology; instead, always ensure that technology in the service of learning goals.

Where Learning & Social Media Meet...

Participants are people interested in the topic of learning from one another and who want to discuss how to help other people learn in formal, informal, social and mobile ways. This summer we aim to renew our commitment to steer clear of topics that are more “training department” oriented (including topics around LMS and instructional design) and focus this time on rather on how people learn, what they learn, and what we’re learning.

The official Twitter account is @lrnchat. Learn more here. Instruction on how to #lrnchat are always available in the sidebar links.

Gust MEES: this is for me the BEST advice I have found and the BEST pratice about Twitter Chats... I am a fan of #lrnchat and I learned a lot only by lurking  ;)

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
George Couros (@gcouros on Twitter) is the Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning for Parkland School Division, a large district near Edmonton, Alberta.

As many school administrators are enjoying their summer break, we all tend to think of ways that we can make our school better in the upcoming year. Often, I point school principals and district leaders to a powerful post by Will Richardson that helps us point the finger right at ourselves when we are looking to push our school ahead. Richardson states:

"Meaningful change ain't gonna happen for our kids if we're not willing to invest in it for ourselves first. At the heart, it's not about schools . . . it's about us."

The first PHSprincipalBlog (changed to Director 4/1/2009) post was on 9/18/2007.  (332 posts overall) I have been using Twitter for 4 years, 4 month...

We still have a lot of work to do, but I feel more strongly than ever before that we are willing to meet the challenges to make our learning environments relevant and engaging. We have the unique opportunity to design and build a new school complex that will be both flexible and transparent and able to accommodate learning for today’s world and the challenges of tomorrow.

I AM SO GLAD I STARTED TO BLOG AND TWEET!

Teaching Teachers to Tweet-Part 1

Teaching Teachers to Tweet-Part 1 | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

It's Connected Educator month here in the United States, which has me thinking about how we get more educators connected to one another. There are a number of sources of inspiration for Connected Educator month, but one important one is the National Education Technology Plan. The National Ed Tech Plan was written by an outstanding team of researchers including Chris Dede, Barry Fishman, David Rose and about a dozen others. The plan has a specific section on helping educators in "Connecting to Content, Expertise, and Activities Through Online Communities," with the this recommendation:

3.2 Leverage social networking technologies and platforms to create communities of practice that provide career-long personal learning opportunities for educators within and across schools, preservice preparation and in-service educational institutions, and professional organizations.

And sure enough, the U.S. Department of Ed is a co-sponsor of Connected Educator month. It's actually really great to see the DOE taking the ideas from the National Ed Tech Plan and bringing them to life.
