Oversimplification is pernicious. I recently attended an event at which presenters offered short demonstrations of emerging technologies. Among these were several providing introduction-level content about artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the like. One speaker demonstrated how easy it is to get started building AI-powered chatbots. The base product turned out to be a tool meant for building branching simulations that could be accessed via mobile device.

New technologies are always appealing; but they run that risk that we’ll end up missing the point and going astray. In particular, I want to challenge one approach that I fear is being misinterpreted and therefore potentially misapplied. In short, answering questions or getting them answered using a chatbot isn’t the same thing as learning.
