Future science: Using 3D worlds to visualize data

Future science: Using 3D worlds to visualize data | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it

Take a walk through a human brain? Fly over the surface of Mars? Computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Chicago are pushing science fiction closer to reality with a wraparound virtual world where a researcher wearing 3D glasses can do all that and more.

In the system, known as CAVE2, an 8-foot-high screen encircles the viewer 320 degrees. A panorama of images springs from 72 stereoscopic liquid crystal display panels, conveying a dizzying sense of being able to touch what’s not really there.

The Z Space display makes interactive 3-D seem mind-bogglingly real | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it

Imagine being able to reach out and grab some of the 3-D objects you saw in the movie Avatar with your own hands. I recently tried a computer display that offers this sort of interactive experience—albeit on a smaller scale—and I think the technique could have many possible uses.

TELedvisors webinar October 2022 Greg Dorrian

A journey through time and space – Mixed reality media in teaching
TELedvisors network webinar Thursday 27/10 12 noon (AEDT)

One of the greatest benefits of technology for learning and teaching is the opportunity to do things that would simply not be possible in person. Augmented/Virtual/Mixed Reality, 3D models, video games and simulations and even simpler tools such as Light Boards extend our ability to share experiences and ideas. This webinar showcases two innovative examples of the use of these teaching tools in practice.

Scanning a dinosaur and other stories: defining digital space through 3D and 360

Despite technical advances in online learning, there are still some laws of physics that prove challenging for navigating physical elements in the online environment. UNE has been using innovative media techniques to break down the divide and render physical objects and places in meaningful ways in digital space. This presentation will showcase some key examples and applications of 3D and 360 media and share lessons learned about what is and isn’t possible.

Greg Dorrian is the Manager of the Learning Media team at UNE. He works with his team to champion the creation, support and education surrounding high-quality digital learning experiences using innovative media technologies in a digital first approach.

3D GameLab turn your classroom into a living game!

"3D GameLab, a quest-based online learning platform re-opens our closed beta on August 1st, as we kick off with a 3 week synchronous online summer camp for teachers and instructional designers, providing you the tools and the training to turn your class into a living game, or just a very cool place to learn! After it's over, you'll have a teacher dashboard and can invite up to 60 students to play their way through the curriculum, as well!"

KF: The 3DGameLab provides a 3 week immersive professional learning opportunity for educators wanting to shift to effective games-based approaches in their teaching and learning. The project seems to have a good track record and will challenge educators by taking them to learnign environments they've probably never considered.
