Sample ELA 9th Grade Units: To Kill a Mockingbird | Institute for Learning

Teachers need rich instructional tools.

To fill this need, the IFL has developed a set of model units K-12 in the four core content areas that illustrate how research-based content and pedagogical routines can transform instruction and raise student achievement.

These units suggest teaching progressions and routines that assure a focus on what specific content needs to be taught and how it should be learned.

Model units include suggested texts, tasks, and teaching routines and guidance, as well as supports for English language learners and students with disabilities.

What do the Common Core say about Digital Literacy?

What do the Common Core say about Digital Literacy? | Common Core State Standards SMUSD | Scoop.it
Earlier this week I happened to overhear a conversation about digital literacy and the Common Core.  The person asking the question was curious what exactly the Common Core Standards said about digital literacy.

Over the past few months while leading workshops on digital writing and the Common Core I have observed similar conversations with a variety of educators. The idea of digital literacy often stops at “my students don’t have access.”

"Technology alone is not the answer. To meet the needs of the Common Core Standards, we will have to focus our attention on powerful instructional practices that make strategic use of technology."

Digital Literacy Defined

Digital literacy actually is comprised of three components:

reading digital text writing digital text developing the technical skills necessary to consume and produce these texts. The Standards and Digital Literacy The concept of digital literacy appears throughout the Common Core Literacy standards. Six of the thirty-two anchor standards specifically call out the importance of digital reading and writing. Another area where digital literacy appears in the standards is in the portraits of career and college ready individuals. Out of nine portraits one specifically highlights the use of technology and digital media: They use technology and digital media strategically and capably. Students need to conduct effective online research; Students need to integrate both online and offline research into what they are learning; Students need to be familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select those best suited to their communication goals.

CA State Schools Chief Presents Plan for Core Standards | 03-20-2012

TUESDAY, MAR. 20, 2012
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced Tuesday that the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Systems Implementation Plan for California was presented to executive and legislative branches of state government.

“This work will take our state’s already world-class standards to a new level, emphasizing a deep understanding of English-language arts and mathematics to ensure our students complete high school, ready to thrive in college and careers.”

Although California’s 1997 academic content standards and the CCSS for English-language arts and mathematics are equal in their level of rigor and call for high expectation for all students, the Common Core standards provide for additional skills and knowledge necessary in a global economy and technology-rich workplace.

For example, under the CCSS students will learn to work collaboratively and use digital media to express and present evidence-based fiction and non-fiction literary analysis.  The CCSS also focus on extending mathematical thinking to real-world challenges so that students develop a depth of understanding and an ability to solve everyday problems through the power of mathematics. To view the CCSS Systems Implementation Plan for California and additional CCSS resources, visit the California Department of Education Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cc
