Google launched its Microsoft Office substitute, Quickoffice, for Apple’s iPhone, Android smartphones and Android tablets, fulfilling a promise made in December.

The release on Tuesday follows the launch of Quickoffice for Apple’s iPad late last year, when a Google executive said that iPhone and Android versions “are on the way.” The move was also preceded by a February announcement that Google was baking the Quickoffice technology into both its Chrome browser and Chrome OS.

Microsoft's combination of SkyDrive and Office Web Apps is great for working online as long as you're using a traditional mouse-and-keyboard PC. But the company doesn't currently support iPads.

 

Even though Microsoft does not yet officially support the iPad with its Office Web Apps, you can still access the online productivity suite thanks to Google’s recently released Chrome browser for iOS. It’s not a perfect solution, but if you need to get some editing done in a pinch itll work.

KF:  It seems quite slow over my work wifi but it does appear to have a wide ranging set of functions.  Have just edited a PPT file from Dropbox using this and it worked well - if a bit sluggish in response.

We have been anticipating it for months. Rumors have been circulating throughout the entire first half of 2012. First, we learned that Microsoft had submitted a series of apps to the App Store for approval. Then, we thought we’d see an official launch alongside the new iPad. Even as recent as a week ago, we discovered that the company will be ready this Fall. Today, The Daily is reporting that Microsoft’s ultimate business package for iOS, Office Mobile, will launch on November 10.
