Our responsibility in protecting institutional, student and personal data in online learning | Tony Bates

Our responsibility in protecting institutional, student and personal data in online learning | Tony Bates | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
With the recent publicity about unauthorised use of personal data on Facebook to manipulate elections in the USA and the U.K., and the above report about Iranians hacking universities for research results and intellectual property, everyone now has to take as much responsibility as possible for making sure personal data is secure and used only for authorised purposes.

This is particularly true for those of us working in online learning, where most of our interaction with students is online. Most institutions using learning management systems provide a secure area for student-instructor interactions – security is one reason why universities and colleges pay big bucks for IT systems, and making sure our student data and interactions are kept secure is a major reason for using a learning management system.

The Weaponization of Education Data

The Weaponization of Education Data | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
As in previous years, it would be quite easy to fill a whole article in this series on “data insecurity,” on the data breaches and cyberattacks that continue to plague education – both schools and software. The issue extends well beyond education technology, of course, and in 2017 we witnessed yet again a number of high profile incidents (including some corporate admissions of breaches that had happened in years past): that over 140 million Social Security Numbers and other personal data had been stolen in a data breach at Equifax, for starters; that every single account at Yahoo – some 3 billion in all – had been affected in its 2013 breach.

In education, there were breaches at colleges and universities, breaches at K–12 schools, breaches at the Department of Education, breaches at education technology companies, and breaches with software schools commonly use. 77 million users accounts stolen from Edmodo. A file configuration error at Schoolzilla that exposed the data of some 1.3 million students.

Whether it was here on Hackaday or elsewhere on the Internet, you’ve surely heard more than a few cautionary tales about the “Internet of Things” by now. As it turns out, giving every gadget you own access to your personal information and Internet connection can lead to unintended consequences. Who knew, right? But if you need yet another example of why trusting your home appliances with your secrets is potentially a bad idea, [Limited Results] is here to make sure you spend the next few hours doubting your recent tech purchases.

Chinese police are using facial-recognition glasses to scan crowds for wanted criminals #security #privacy #AI  | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
Railway police have begun using facial-recognition eyewear to catch criminals. In tests the glasses identified faces within 100 milliseconds.Seven people have been arrested for a range of previous crimes, and another 26 were banned from travel.China has been ramping up its use of facial-recognition technology as it moves toward a nationwide database that can recognize any citizen within three seconds.

Farid Mheir's curator insight, February 11, 2018 11:54 AM

WHY IT MATTERS: face recognition using AI has been around for a few years. It used to require large computers in the cloud. Not anymore. This changes everything.

1) privacy: it will become more and more difficult to protect your privacy in the future. I have written about this before, specifically when the Google glasses came out 3 years ago. It is a concept that is interpreted differently in countries and cultures - such as China vs USA.

2) China: is investing heavily to win the AI war with the US. So we should expect every product - from glasses to door bells to cell phones to cars - to have face recognition built into the device in the very near future. At the CES2018 show, I saw a number of companies that offer face recognition chips ready to be embedded at low price into any consumer device. So it *will* happen. More on China in a later post...

3) protection: people will naturally want to protect themselves. We should start to see face masks that are designed to fool face recognition hardware as has been shown to be possible recently.

Case in point: My group has just released a new preprint (get it here) that shows how the WiFi information routinely collected by your smartphone can easily be converted to precise information about your location. WiFi routers reveal where you live, work, and spend your leisure time.

While your phone may have told you that WiFi helps “improve location accuracy”, it may come as a surprise that:

A majority of apps in the store have access to the list of routers around you (scanned every 20 seconds).Your Android smartphone by default scans for WiFi routers even if you disable WiFi.
