Accreditation of Online Degree Programs: Frequently Asked Questions

Accreditation of Online Degree Programs: Frequently Asked Questions | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Accrediting agencies hold online programs to the same standards of quality as those on campus, experts say. Accreditation is a process conducted by an outside authority to ensure that a school and degree program meet certain standards of quality and rigor. Online, blended and on-campus degree programs can all be accredited. While it’s voluntary, accreditation has many benefits and, in many ways, validates a program to employers and other colleges or universities. Legitimate online degree programs are accredited by agencies recognized by either the Department of Education or the nonprofit Council for Higher Education Accreditation, known as CHEA."

"Dan Schwartz is the brand new Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University, but he doesn’t really want to talk about it."

“I don’t think I’ll have too much to say on my vision,” he says, when I first contact him. It’s not because he isn’t excited. He’s thrilled. It’s because he sees his role as a facilitator of the visions of others—“students, teachers, people who care deeply about education in school and out of school.”

Are stackable credentials now a necessity?

Are stackable credentials now a necessity? | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Traditional colleges as well as alternative providers are rushing to offer short-term certificate programs to give working adults an opportunity for quick retraining. Many higher ed leaders say stackable credentials are a critical piece of this development. Students who come to school for a short period should be able to work toward a degree in the long-term. That’s what will help them most in their careers."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

At UTRGV, students can earn two graduate certificates (in E-Learning and Technology Leadership) which can transfer directly into the Master of Education in Educational Technology. This is one way for students to get more value for their money.
