Sal Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education

Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script -- give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help.

A particularly thought-provoking video due to the outstanding people chosen to speak in it. It was produced by Ericsson in 2012, so it is relatively current. Appearances by Stepehn Heppell, Sugatra Mitra, Seth Godin, Jose Ferreira, Lois Mbugua, Margaret Kositany and Dephne Koller. Well worth the time to watch. Think about what setting you can show this in and the types of conversations that it can stimulate.

‘Never send a human to do a machine’s job:’ Five big mistakes in education technology and how to fix them | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
"Technology has not done much to improve education on a large scale .... The achievement gap has persisted. But the funny thing is that enthusiasm for technology never seems to have been affected by the 'failures.'

------------------------

Cyclic amnesia best characterizes the history of technology in education. Over the last 100 years or so, we have gone through many cycles of hope and then disappointment: from film to radio, from radio to TV, from TV to computers, and from computers to the Internet. Every cycle started with amazing euphoria and then ended with disappointing outcomes. But somehow, we managed to forget the failures. We did not even stop to reflect what went wrong because new technology emerged, with more power and thus more hope. The new technology seemed so compelling that we could not afford time to reflect. We must act quickly to realize the potential of the new technology. Otherwise, we’d be missing out on its educational benefits. As a result, we have been repeating the same mistakes.

300 Years of Distance Learning Evolution [INFOGRAPHIC] | WPLMS | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

If you thought that distance learning was a product of today, then you would be mistaken. In fact, the first distance learning program on record took place in 1728, when a local teacher by the name of Caleb Phillips advertised shorthand correspondence lessons offered by mail! By 1800, the growth of the U.S. Postal Service brought about an increase in the number of distance learning correspondence courses in the country.

What is Education 3.0

What is Education 3.0 | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

Education 3.0 is a term that has been used to describe a level of transformative capabilities and practices for education in the 21st century.

Professor Derek Keats, of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa,[1] and his co-author Jan Philipp Schmidt, FreeCourseWare Manager at University of the Western Cape, South Africa, used the term in 2007 to apply to the use and impact on education of collaborative and personalized learning, reusable learning content, and recognition of prior learning (RPL) whether by formal or informal means.

Keats' explorations were focused on higher education.[2] Dr. John Moravec at the University of Minnesota broadens this view, and describes Education 3.0 as a product necessary to support what he labels "Society 3.0" - a near future paradigm of social co-constructivism, ambient technology, and propelled by continuous innovation at all levels of society.[3]
