Entangled pedagogy: why does it matter to educational design?

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, despite a rapidly growing field of online education, technology was often positioned as a specialist domain, as part of “technology-enhanced learning”, “e-learning”, “online learning”, “digital education”, etc. (Baran et al., 2011). At the same time, technological platforms such as Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), plagiarism detection software, and learning analytics dashboards, were promoted by government, EdTech companies, educational managers and technology enthusiasts, often without much attention to theories of technology integration in education (Hew et al., 2019).

#Take5 #71 Gilly Salmon: Five steps forward

#Take5 #71 Gilly Salmon: Five steps forward | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

The 5-stage model for online learning was first built nearly 30 years ago from grounded and action research. (Sure, cue violins!). It was rooted in social constructivism, learner engagement and scaffolding when content was still king. Initially, I deployed it to support tutor development – the term I called ‘e-moderating’.

Fast forward through three editions of the book, another on the way, and the birth of Carpe Diem Learning Design – a team-based approach to learning design. Many colleagues across levels, disciplines and geography, have recently discovered or revisited the five stages to support their rapid pivot to quality online, blended and hybrid education.

Now teams use the model (and its sister framework, e-tivities) for both design and teaching development. So, I thought you might like a 2022 , and beyond, reminder.

Top Tools for Learning 2021 – Results of the 15th Annual Survey published 1 September 2021 | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
2021 was the YEAR OF DISRUPTION! There were a substantial number of new tools nominated this year so the main list has now been extended to 300 tools to accommodate them, and each of the 3 sub-lists has been increased to 150 tools. Although the top of this year’s list is relatively stable, there is quite bit of movement of tools on the rest of the list, and the effect of the new tools has been to push other established tools down – if not off the list altogether. Further analysis of the list appears in the right-hand column of the table below.

On-line labs enhance student learning

Laboratory classes are an integral part of many university subjects in disciplines such as science, engineering and health. The pandemic of 2020 forced many such classes to be rescheduled or waived, but it has also seen a rise in interest in on-line laboratory simulations, such as Labster, Open STEM Labs and SimBio.
