Meet Professor Maryanne Dever -  Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education and Digital) | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
Four weeks into her role as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education and Digital), Professor Maryanne Dever has amassed an impressive daily step count as she traverses the ANU campus. While this approach may have prompted a rethink of her daily shoe selection, it is consistent with her desire to imagine her portfolio as a roving one, characterised by collaboration and a desire to listen and learn from staff and students.

“I wouldn’t take it if you offered it to me for free” said the head of the school I visited  in the huge Katutura Township on the outskirts of Windhoek in Africa. In 2008 some guys turned up started to drill four holes in the wall, installed dial-up computers, and left explaining almost nothing.

Peter Mellow's curator insight, June 2, 2013 7:02 PM

As we all know, just giving students technology will not be as productive as giving them the tehcnology and guidence in the form of an educator, who knows the big picture.

College is less thorny, but every bit as emotional. People whose self worth is tied up in possessing or providing a half-million dollar Ivy League education don’t particularly love the idea that it should be made available for free online to the rest of the world.

Teaching Without Walls: Life Beyond the Lecture: Infographic: How to Humanize Your Online Class

Teaching Without Walls: Life Beyond the Lecture: Infographic: How to Humanize Your Online Class | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

Since then, I've tried lots of different strategies in my classes and, despite the fact that our world has become more connected through social technologies in recent years (that are easy to use and often free), I still have students who regularly share with me that my class is different -- because they feel like they know me and they feel like I care. This isn't to say that online instructors who use voice/video and interactive tools to design and facilitate their courses are the only instructors who care. But these strategies are key to my ability to be present in the experiences of my students. And they're key to my ability to share my inflection, my concern, and my enthusiasm for them -- nuances text cannot convey.
