‘Never send a human to do a machine’s job:’ Five big mistakes in education technology and how to fix them | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
"Technology has not done much to improve education on a large scale .... The achievement gap has persisted. But the funny thing is that enthusiasm for technology never seems to have been affected by the 'failures.'

------------------------

Cyclic amnesia best characterizes the history of technology in education. Over the last 100 years or so, we have gone through many cycles of hope and then disappointment: from film to radio, from radio to TV, from TV to computers, and from computers to the Internet. Every cycle started with amazing euphoria and then ended with disappointing outcomes. But somehow, we managed to forget the failures. We did not even stop to reflect what went wrong because new technology emerged, with more power and thus more hope. The new technology seemed so compelling that we could not afford time to reflect. We must act quickly to realize the potential of the new technology. Otherwise, we’d be missing out on its educational benefits. As a result, we have been repeating the same mistakes.

Educational Technology Strategy

Educational Technology Strategy | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

The tertiary education sector is in the midst of transformative change. Student demand for more flexibility in learning experiences challenges the traditional model of lecture-intensive, campus-based education. As technology makes knowledge accessible anywhere, anytime at low or no cost, Curtin needs to rethink teaching and learning in relation to its key clients (students and employers), and with respect to the competitive environment in which we now operate.

Ten Guiding Principles for the Use of Technology in Education

Technology in learning is many things.
• It is the tools we use to deliver instruction in classrooms and in virtual space.
• It is the tools learners use to extend, enhance, and transform their learning.
• It is the tools we use to increase our productivity as learners, instructors, and administrators.
• It is the processes we engage in to construct learning environments.
• It is the design of learning activities and programs.
• It is the process by which we learn.
• It is curricula – a body of knowledge and skills – that studies how things are done.

Technology is a complex term, made more so by the many interpretations we all have of it.

Our application of technologies in learning has been in many ways unfocused. The following principles are intended to provide a (far from definitive!) guide for reflecting on the purpose and use of technology in learning.
