I am a university lecturer and have been told that I have to put my course online. Do you have advice for a novice on where to start? There is no "right" way to start teaching online. As is the case with instruction in face-to-face teaching, there are general principles that should underpin your approach, but how you bring these principles to life will depend on several factors.

Let's assume that all learning - as we go forward - will use a MIX of on-demand and live content, context and collaboration. Some will be highly designed and some will be real-time. Some will be digitally connected and some will be face to face. At Learning 2012, we will chatting about the changing language of learning. From career paths, to college programs to labeling our learning offerings - it is time to shift the use of the "e" as electronic and instead see the embedded "e" in Learning to mean:

There seems to be something pretty big missing from this infographic by Lean Forward. Know what it is? Here’s a hint: it rhymes with ‘eech-err’ and it’s the sixth person needed to implement e-learning.
It’s a teacher! The real person implementing e-learning needs to be a teacher who understands pedagogy and how it all fits together. In any case, this infographic is still quire helpful and useful for anyone considering a more e-learning-centric classroom.

"Now, I guess the argument could be made about the idea of relativity. I mention that Blur and Oasis as bands and a successful ones at that were partially responsible for creating the environment that afforded Coldplay the opportunity to sign for a major label. This is what we call in music fandom ‘a fight startin’ comment!’ However, let’s assume that it is correct. Coldplay have sold millions of records, are incredibly popular and arguably quite successful. So, by my logic, MOOCs arising from the 2ndgeneration (after Siemens and Downes) could equally be the next big thing. I could go into how Coldplay give the audience what they want to hear and they do what they do extremely well. They have live shows that engage the audience and involve them in the experience. However, the analogy is just that. What I would note is that Coldplay did not copy the chords and lyrics of Blur or Oasis and just make them with new guitars and keyboards. They adapted, they were influenced, inspired and then made their own thing. It wasn’t Blur v.2, it was Coldplay v.1 and that was different from what went before. Same as it ever was.

Despite ongoing debate about the effects of online learning, a report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project and Elon University shows that a majority of technology stakeholders expect it to transform higher education by 2020.
In a report released today, Pew and Elon University said that 60 percent of internet experts, researchers, observers and users polled said they agreed that by 2020, “there will be mass adoption of teleconferencing and distance learning to leverage expert resources … a transition to ‘hybrid’ classes that combine online learning components with less-frequent on-campus, in-person class meetings.” By comparison, 39 percent endorsed the contrary position that “in 2020 higher education will not be much different from the way it is today.” Via Daniel Tan

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan. I knew the student evaluations from my spring online class would be harsh, but that harshness exceeded anything I had imagined.
The class was disorganized, students said again and again.
The professor was distant and uninvolved, others growled.
Several students dismissed my attempt to promote peer learning, complained about a lack of feedback, moaned about the added cost of an online class, snarled about my ability as a teacher. One even suggested that I was unfit to teach.

Two threats are impacting rationale for open labs. First, more and more students are bringing their own devices to college and fewer and fewer have no access to computing resources, even if it is a netbook or iPad/smartphone. This trend is even more advanced at institutions that cater to wealthier students. Several years ago the University of Virginia started eliminating its Open Labs because they determined very few of their students lacked computing devices.

"The VLE and other forms of institutionalised e-learning can create barriers between the teacher and the learner. The more automated the system becomes, the more learner feels disconnected from the network forming around them. Is this the same as the way rock stars became disconnected from their audiences, before punk smashed the wall down and through confrontation and challenge made the audience re-connect, often viscerally? Are we at a juncture where e-learning has made the academic the rock star? And if so, how do we explode and deconstruct that myth, hand power back to the audience, bring them on stage, show them a few chords and make them a member of the band? How do we encourage the learners to make their own band?"

Education buzzwords have for a long time driven me insane as we spend our lives in schools latching on to phrase after phrase that tries to make us sound more knowledgeable without actually being more knowledgeable. I fear sometimes us “tech geeks” in schools ( definitely me included) are getting caught in the same trap as we move from one innovation to the next just to look more tech savvy than the next guy. This is a long list of edtech trends and pedagogies. It can seem quite daunting to the uninitiated and we can scare them off trying something really useful if keep pushing for more change. Outside our university lecture halls, the rest of the world is in the grips of a digital communications revolution offering an ever increasing number of options for truly engaging, personalised learning.

Una de las problemáticas que se puede enfrentar el docente como desarrollador de contenidos cuando se ve involucrado en el proceso de diseño instruccional para construir cursos en línea, es la adaptación al equipo de trabajo (celda de producción) con el que tendrá que entablar un diálogo e interacción para "ponerse de acuerdo" en cómo va a elaborarse los materiales de consulta, la estructura de los contenidos, las ilustraciones, si va o no a tener recursos digitales multimedia, si está o no permitido emplear recursos de la Web 2.0 en el curso, si las actividades de aprendizaje requieren cierta interactividad, o si la evaluación de los alumnos se adecúa con la competencia o habilidad indicada. En sí, es toda una verdadera labor académica que requiere del entusiamo, la pasión y el interés por el quehacer de la enseñanza a distancia.
