Time for online teaching

Time for online teaching | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

I am a university lecturer and have been told that I have to put my course online. Do you have advice for a novice on where to start?

There is no "right" way to start teaching online. As is the case with instruction in face-to-face teaching, there are general principles that should underpin your approach, but how you bring these principles to life will depend on several factors.

interesting but simple explanation...confirms what I have known for the past four years - I need more learning designers :)

Roberto Ivan Ramirez's curator insight, May 13, 2013 2:00 PM

e" in e-Learning Vanishing? | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

Let's assume that all learning - as we go forward - will use a MIX of on-demand and live content, context and collaboration. Some will be highly designed and some will be real-time. Some will be digitally connected and some will be face to face. At Learning 2012, we will chatting about the changing language of learning. From career paths, to college programs to labeling our learning offerings - it is time to shift the use of the "e" as electronic and instead see the embedded "e" in Learning to mean:

The 6 People Needed To Implement E-Learning In Your Classroom | Edudemic | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

There seems to be something pretty big missing from this infographic by Lean Forward. Know what it is? Here’s a hint: it rhymes with ‘eech-err’ and it’s the sixth person needed to implement e-learning.

It’s a teacher! The real person implementing e-learning needs to be a teacher who understands pedagogy and how it all fits together. In any case, this infographic is still quire helpful and useful for anyone considering a more e-learning-centric classroom.

"Now, I guess the argument could be made about the idea of relativity. I mention that Blur and Oasis as bands and a successful ones at that were partially responsible for creating the environment that afforded Coldplay the opportunity to sign for a major label. This is what we call in music fandom ‘a fight startin’ comment!’ However, let’s assume that it is correct. Coldplay have sold millions of records, are incredibly popular and arguably quite successful. So, by my logic, MOOCs arising from the 2ndgeneration (after Siemens and Downes) could equally be the next big thing. I could go into how Coldplay give the audience what they want to hear and they do what they do extremely well. They have live shows that engage the audience and involve them in the experience. However, the analogy is just that. What I would note is that Coldplay did not copy the chords and lyrics of Blur or Oasis and just make them with new guitars and keyboards. They adapted, they were influenced, inspired and then made their own thing. It wasn’t Blur v.2, it was Coldplay v.1 and that was different from what went before. Same as it ever was.

You may ask yourself, what is that beautiful house?
You may ask yourself, where does that highway lead to?
You may ask yourself, am I right, am I wrong?
You may say to yourself, my god, what have I done?

(Talking Heads – Once in a Lifetime)"

Memo to higher ed: get ready for remote learning to rock your world | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
Despite ongoing debate about the effects of online learning, a report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project and Elon University shows that a majority of technology stakeholders expect it to transform higher education by 2020.

In a report released today, Pew and Elon University said that 60 percent of internet experts, researchers, observers and users polled said they agreed that by 2020, “there will be mass adoption of teleconferencing and distance learning to leverage expert resources … a transition to ‘hybrid’ classes that combine online learning components with less-frequent on-campus, in-person class meetings.” By comparison, 39 percent endorsed the contrary position that “in 2020 higher education will not be much different from the way it is today.”

Is e-learning effective? Pointless question

Is e-learning effective? Pointless question | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

"Is paper a more effective teaching medium than speech? Stupid question isn't it? It depends what you write, what you say, how you express yourself and above all what do actually do with these media. That's why I get rather tired of the endless discussions about so-called e-learning. Is it more effective than chalk and talk? Does it lead to better student grades? Again rather irrelevant questions."

I spend a huge amount of my time reading about the top 5 apps for teachers, the best software for collaborative writing, the best web tool for this, that or the other, how to do something that I’ve never heard of but should have and now feel guilty about, so I’m going to Google it and try to drop it into a conversation next time I’m face to face with another teacher, so that I seem on top of the ever-burgeoning world of educational technology.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan. I might even describe myself as being someone close to the cutting edge of what is going on, but the more I read, the more concerned I become about the quality of what is going on in schools.

Pushing Through The Perils of Teaching Online - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

I knew the student evaluations from my spring online class would be harsh, but that harshness exceeded anything I had imagined.

The class was disorganized, students said again and again.

The professor was distant and uninvolved, others growled.

Several students dismissed my attempt to promote peer learning, complained about a lack of feedback, moaned about the added cost of an online class, snarled about my ability as a teacher. One even suggested that I was unfit to teach.

Learning with 'e's: Who will survive?

Learning with 'e's: Who will survive? | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

The dynamics of education in the 21st Century are very different from those witnessed in previous years. In the last century, education (in all its forms) was based on the assumption that knowledge content was scarce, and that formal education (university, college, school) was the only place it could be accessed. Then along came the World Wide Web.

The Challenge of Shifting Paradigms | The New Media Consortium | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

Two threats are impacting rationale for open labs. First, more and more students are bringing their own devices to college and fewer and fewer have no access to computing resources, even if it is a netbook or iPad/smartphone. This trend is even more advanced at institutions that cater to wealthier students. Several years ago the University of Virginia started eliminating its Open Labs because they determined very few of their students lacked computing devices.

E-Learning: Going down to the crossroads. Track 1: Tramps like us baby we were born to run: Singing to you, singing with you, singing for you, not singing at you… | Peter Bryant | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

"The VLE and other forms of institutionalised e-learning can create barriers between the teacher and the learner. The more automated the system becomes, the more learner feels disconnected from the network forming around them. Is this the same as the way rock stars became disconnected from their audiences, before punk smashed the wall down and through confrontation and challenge made the audience re-connect, often viscerally? Are we at a juncture where e-learning has made the academic the rock star? And if so, how do we explode and deconstruct that myth, hand power back to the audience, bring them on stage, show them a few chords and make them a member of the band? How do we encourage the learners to make their own band?"

KF:  A terrific opinion piece that draws a rich analogy between punk rock and academia inthe age of eLearning...   can't wait for the second track.

Educational Technology Buzzwords

Educational Technology Buzzwords | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

Education buzzwords have for a long time driven me insane as we spend our lives in schools latching on to phrase after phrase that tries to make us sound more knowledgeable without actually being more knowledgeable. I fear sometimes us “tech geeks” in schools ( definitely me included) are getting caught in the same trap as we move from one innovation to the next just to look more tech savvy than the next guy. This is a long list of edtech trends and pedagogies. It can seem quite daunting to the uninitiated and we can scare them off trying something really useful if keep pushing for more change.
