Publishing and sharing data papers can increase impact and benefits researchers, publishers, funders and libraries

Publishing and sharing data papers can increase impact and benefits researchers, publishers, funders and libraries | Everything open | Scoop.it
The process of compiling and submitting data papers to journals has long been a frustrating one to the minority of researchers that have tried. Fiona Murphy, part of a project team working to automate this process, outlines why publishing data papers is important and how open data can be of benefit to all stakeholders across scholarly communications and higher education.

Giving Researchers Credit for their Data – or ‘Data2Paper’ as we’re now more snappily calling it – is a cloud-based app which uses existing DataCite and ORCID-derived metadata to automate the process of compiling and submitting a data paper to a journal without the researcher having to leave the research space or wrestle directly with the journal’s submission system (an occasional source of frustration)

Using open citation data to benefit research | Jisc

Using open citation data to benefit research | Jisc | Everything open | Scoop.it

Until recently, if you mentioned citations many people would immediately think about lists of names and publications at the end of a document and short snippets embedded within the text indicating where the connection applied. But a shift has taken place and citations have now gone far beyond being a simple link between two pieces of paper. Processes have been added, techniques refined and something new has been formed.

I’m part of our digital infrastructure team and I’m going to tell you about the effects of that citation shift and how you can use them to your advantage.

PLOS Biology: Sharing Research Data and Intellectual Property Law: A Primer

PLOS Biology: Sharing Research Data and Intellectual Property Law: A Primer | Everything open | Scoop.it

Sharing research data by depositing it in connection with a published article or otherwise making data publicly available sometimes raises intellectual property questions in the minds of depositing researchers, their employers, their funders, and other researchers who seek to reuse research data. In this context or in the drafting of data management plans, common questions are (1) what are the legal rights in data; (2) who has these rights; and (3) how does one with these rights use them to share data in a way that permits or encourages productive downstream uses? Leaving to the side privacy and national security laws that regulate sharing certain types of data, this Perspective explains how to work through the general intellectual property and contractual issues for all research data.

EC Consultation on open research data | Open Knowledge Foundation Blog

EC Consultation on open research data | Open Knowledge Foundation Blog | Everything open | Scoop.it

The European Commission held a public consultation on open access to research data on July 2 in Brussels inviting statements from researchers, industry, funders, IT and data centre professionals, publishers and libraries. The inputs of these stakeholders will play some role in revising the Commission’s policy and are particularly important for the ongoing negotiations on the next big EU research programme Horizon 2020, where about 25-30 billion Euros would be available for academic research. Five questions formed the basis of the discussion:

How we can define research data and what types of research data should be open?

When and how does openness need to be limited?

How should the issue of data re-use be addressed?

Where should research data be stored and made accessible?

How can we enhance “data awareness” and a “culture of sharing”?-
