Alexander Daron's curator insight,

I chose this resource because I feel strongly that we are giving too many standardized tests to our students. Working in a middle school, our students are worn down by the end of the year. They are sick and tired of standardized testing, and we shouldn't test in my opinion. Other countries around the world are not testing as much as the United States, and their educational systems are still extremely effective. I hope that this article will make those making these decisions to test our students if it is worth it. We are putting too much stress and pressure on our students to score well instead of focusing our attention on their learning.

We, as teachers are frequently under the impression, that unless we control what children learn, we wouldn't have done our duties as teachers. At CERT we believe that giving the children enough flexibility to be creative and express their own ways of learning, is an imperative ingredient in the recipe for success and excellence. We need learners who are critical, reflective and show initiative. Rote learning, standardised tests, etc. are easy ways to have a silent classroom. Learning goes so much more beyond that. |
