This was a really fun article to read about teaching the concept of time to autistic children. The reason this article caught my attention is because it talked about how to teach autistic children the concept of time, but also it can be applied to regular children who are not understanding the concept of time. I could relate to this article because when my brother was around five years old he did not understand how time worked. My brother would always be confused as to why people did certain activities during certain times of the day. My brother would get really anxious if my mother did not show up at a certain time from work because that's all he knew. It was interesting reading about the activities that you could do to improve this method. This is being aimed towards families who want to give their child a better understanding of the concept of time while not overwhelming them with facts out of a book (Nauert, 2012). This is a physical act that you can do with your child that helps you gain more insight with how they think time happens. What I love about this article is that it is not only aimed towards autistic children either, it is also aimed towards regular children who may not fully understand time (Nauert, 2012). By doing activities such as "watching a video together and stopping it at regular intervals to review and discuss the order of events and the “why?” of the outcomes" or "taking a trip to the library and picking out story books that have a clearly delineated beginning/middle/end, and reviewing the sequence and target vocabulary" all could be beneficial for the child (Nauert, 2012). I love how that author linked back to her own experience in order to create a strategy that works of most families. Although, there is cultural differences when it comes to learning about time and activities with their children. For instance, some cultures prefer not to be so absorbed with the concept of time, but rather live in the moment (Nauert, 2007). Most of us would love to live each day only in the present, but many of us need a structured schedule to plan the days ahead. Living one day at a time can change how you view the world (Nauert, 2007).
