Students have been expected to memorize what they are taught without applying the topics to important or real life scenarios. The process is simple: teach, memorize, take a test, forget the information. The article talks about developing new methods to teach students, which are more important than ever with virtual learning. Linking a topic to a real world situation allows students to better understand it rather than memorizing it. If it is understood, students will be able to apply their new skills to real situations. If it is memorized, they will do well on the test and most likely forget it later.
