After the scooping this article, the link did not work, and upon further research I learned that Edmodo is no longer an active service. Nonetheless, I thought I would share my experience using Edmodo a few years ago. At first glance, Edmodo had a similar built layout as Facebook. That's what made it easy to learn how to navigate. It had many of the similar features as Facebook, but catered towards education. It was a great service, which shocked me when I saw the news that it had closed down. Nevertheless, there are many great free services out there that can help in classroom instruction.
