Technology skills only scratch the surface of the digital divide - The Hechinger Report

Technology skills only scratch the surface of the digital divide - The Hechinger Report | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The realities of the “digital divide” are increasingly apparent. In a consumer culture that equates status with early adoption of the newest iPhone, access to new technology necessarily splits pretty clearly along socio-economic class lines. According to U.S. census data, for example, more than 30 million homes have no broadband access, most of them concentrated …

What Matters to Academic-Library Directors? Information Literacy | Wired Campus - Blogs - The CHE | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Whether they work at a big research university, a small four-year college, or something in between, academic-library directors share a “resounding dedication” to teaching information literacy to undergraduates. Beyond that, the priorities they set for their libraries depend on the size and nature of their institutions and how many (or few) resources they have to work with.

An increased push from government to use online learning for greater academic productivity

In Ontario, the Minister for Training, Colleges and Universities starkly presented the situation facing universities and colleges in Ontario over the next few years: take more students, produce better quality outcomes, but receive no more money, because there isn’t any. He challenged the institutions to look to technology to increase productivity. The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario commissioned a report on online learning, productivity and quality.

Integrating library literacy through distance learning module design

Dr Clare Brooks (Dept of Curriculum Pedagogy and Assessment, Institute of Education).  Research team: Antony Daws and Barbara Sakarya Project goals: The IOE library team and MA in Education program...

The aim of this extended project is to develop effective strategies to embed library literacy into the module to encourage international students on a distance learning programme to develop effective library usage.  The embedding of library literacy into the module design is a potential solution to the problem of inadequate library literacy in distance learning students. The research seeks to fully evaluate the impact of this integration on both the students’ learning, and their successful completion of the module. The project is intended to improve student access, experience and achievement through their use of elearning technology. The results of this evaluation will be widely disseminated through University of London International Programmes, the CDE network and to colleagues at the Institute of Education.

Elizabeth E Charles's insight:

Project in 2013 will embed information literacy into MA degree for international students on distance learning programme

Smart Strategies That Help Students Learn How to Learn

Smart Strategies That Help Students Learn How to Learn | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Teaching students good learning strategies would ensure that they know how to acquire new knowledge, which leads to improved learning outcomes, writes lead author Helen Askell-Williams of Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. And studies bear this out. Askell-Williams cites as one example a recent finding by PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment, which administers academic proficiency tests to students around the globe, and place American students in the mediocre middle. “Students who use appropriate strategies to understand and remember what they read, such as underlining important parts of the texts or discussing what they read with other people, perform at least 73 points higher in the PISA assessment—that is, one full proficiency level or nearly two full school years—than students who use these strategies the least,” the PISA report reads.

"In our schools, “the emphasis is on what students need to learn, whereas little emphasis—if any—is placed on training students how they should go about learning the content and what skills will promote efficient studying to support robust learning,”
Edumorfosis's curator insight, December 30, 2016 5:00 PM

Teaching not Telling: Information Literacy and Summon Day | ProQuest Blog 2014

Teaching not Telling: Information Literacy and Summon Day | ProQuest Blog 2014 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The event held on 25 July 2013, at Manchester Metropolitan University, incorporated a mix of formats, including practical insights and teaching tips, and more reflective considerations of the role and impact of teaching librarians, through paper presentations and lightning talks.

Emma Coonan, Information Skills Librarian at University of East Anglia, put together the full proceedings from the event and created a paper to illustrate the key findings of the day.  Emma describes the papers in the collection as "not only exploring technological developments: they also consider too the institutional culture shifts demanded by the disruptive technology of discovery systems (Pattern); how our presentations can be made more relevant and engaging (Jenkins, Leonard); and how to align the way we present information systems with students’ widely varying subject needs (Buchanan). They explored how to design activities that enable students to relate their prior experience to new knowledge (Edwards and Hill’s two contributions); how to help build students’ confidence and self-belief (Johnston and Walton); and how to interweave threshold concepts about academic practices into practical information skills support (Coonan)."

Key Findings

See the 2013 report for a full list of key messages, findings, and supporting data.

Students recognize the value of technology but still need guidance when it comes to better using it for academics.

Students prefer blended learning environments while beginning to experiment with MOOCs.

Students are ready to use their mobile devices more for academics, and they look to institutions and instructors for opportunities and encouragement to do so.

Students value their privacy, and using technology to connect with them has its limits.
