Voting for your vision of future libraries #iflaglobalvision

Voting for your vision of future libraries #iflaglobalvision | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Voting at the Globalvision website https://globalvision.ifla.org/ was launched at the 2017 World Library and Information Conference in Wroclaw, Poland. Voting closes on 30 September 2017.

There have been a series of face to face and virtual meetings amongst those involved in IFLA (the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) over the past six months, in all regions of the world, discussing a vision for libraries. I joined in a discussion virtually with fellow members of the IFLA Information Literacy Section. "They [were] focused on a set of questions designed through a collaborative process, e.g. What are the core values of libraries? What are libraries exceptionally good at? What are the main challenges to libraries? What would be the characteristics of a united library field?"

New Technologies will Both Expand and Limit Who has Access to Information | IFLA Trend Report

New Technologies will Both Expand and Limit Who has Access to Information | IFLA Trend Report | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The IFLA Trend Report acknowledges access to information as having a profound influence on future developments in the information economy.

An ever-expanding digital universe will bring a higher value to information literacy skills like basic reading and competence with digital tools. People who lack these skills will face barriers to inclusion in a growing range of areas. The nature of new online business models will heavily influence who can successfully own, profit from, share or access information in the future.

Continuing Professional Development: Principles and Best Practices | IFLA

Continuing Professional Development: Principles and Best Practices | IFLA | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The quality of service provided to the public by library and information science institutions depends on the expertise of their staff.  Constant flux in the needs of societies, changing technologies, and growth in professional knowledge demand that information workers must expand their understanding and update their skills on an ongoing basis. As stated in the IFLA/UNESCO Public Library Manifesto 1994:

The librarian is an active intermediary between users and resources. Professional and continuing education of the librarian is indispensable to ensure adequate services.

Because adequate service depends on staff who are well prepared and continuously learning, the quality of ongoing educational opportunities is of vital concern.  This document sets forth principles that should assure high quality continuing professional development for library staff. It has been developed on behalf of IFLA’s Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Section (CPDWL), with input from its members and small project funding from IFLA.
