Innovation Isn’t About Ideas – Member Feature Stories –

We’re conditioned to think that someone like Steve Jobs or Elon Musk stands up on stage, announces that the world has changed, and everybody just goes along. It never really happens that way because innovation is never a single event. It is a long process of discovery, engineering, and transformation that usually takes about 30 years.
“Don’t worry about people stealing your ideas,” said the computing pioneer Howard Aiken. “If your ideas are any good, you’ll have to ram them down people’s throats.” Never were truer words spoken. Great innovators aren’t just people with ideas. They’re people willing to stick it out and take the shots from people who ridicule them. Eventually, if they’re lucky, they really do change the world
Kim Flintoff's insight:
And therein lies the challenge fo4 schools - if Innovation takes decades who sticks at it long enough to bring about the changes required??  The “We tried that”, or “no-one liked it” reposes that move us onto the next novel idea are the enemies of innovation, and pretty much endorse the status quo.

In individual challenges, students navigate through a number of interactive activities designed to engage and educate simultaneously. In collaborative challenges, students form teams in order to complete project based tasks, and maintain communication through the integration of Cisco’s WebEx Teams.

Teachers can create these individual or collaborative challenges through the online admin authoring portal. In this portal, teachers can create syllabus specific individual or collaborative challenges (including grading outcomes), and assign them to a specific cohort of students. The data captured by students within Global Challenge can also be accessed to assess and evaluate the overall learning process.

“We have to be very collaborative here,” agrees Sue Fletcher, a biomedical researcher at Murdoch University, also in Perth. “We’re a smaller city. We don’t have the same number of institutions with big expensive equipment, so the universities work together really well to access each others’ facilities.”

Data support this perspective. A 2016 report by Nature Index, which tracks scientific-article author affiliations, found that Curtin University and the University of Western Australia (UWA) formed Australia’s strongest collaboration between two research institutes, coming 73rd globally. No other Australian university made it into the list of the top 100 partnerships.

The data also showed that Curtin was the most collaborative Australian university overall.

“Collaboration comes naturally here,” says Robyn Owens, deputy vice-chancellor for research at UWA. “It’s only by doing that that we can ensure we have the appropriate research infrastructure in Western Australia.”

Australian Universities need a new approach to education, one that harnesses the enthusiasm of the next generation of students to solve society’s biggest problems, a new white paper has argued.

Its authors said students who attend university because of the cultural narrative that it will get them a better job are following an outdated playbook. Those graduating this year instead face fewer than ever ‘zero-experience’ entry level graduate roles and an environment in which employers are caring less about university degrees.

“These graduates are taking roles that someone without an expensive university education can easily fill,” the white paper read. “If this trend continues then a university education becomes less of a pathway to meaningful employment and more of a luxury good.”
