Interesting point of view of Tomasz Tunguz on what the AppStore model had to do in WhatsApp's massive valuation. I'm not sure I agree with everything he writes though. Yes, the AppStore is very competitive and the old tricks don't work there. Yes, increased competitions and a short-tail distribution means higher outcomes and rewards for those who make it. But I'm not sure the model is that virtuous: - first, I'm not sure it favors innovation that much: web sites are optimized on a daily basis (or actually often multiple changes per day) while Apps need to go through approval processes and tests, etc... - second, as Andrew Chen pointed out, this hit or miss market the AppStore is means that mobile startups are failing without a second chance to iterate and come out with the right product.

This article by Cory Perkins explores a variety of iPad paintings created by contemporary artist Hockney. The article begins with an older digital painting created by Hockney using Adobe Photoshop, before the introduction of tablets. In 2012, Hockney also began using digital video cameras in his work. Some of his installations include 18 large screens to display videos. Hockney has shown a steady and exciting trend in incorporating technology in his work.

Undoubtedly, technology has played a considerable role in the visual arts for centuries. Artists have created new art forms with new tools and will continue to make them in the future. Art and technology are two fields that advance with every generation pursuing innovation. Technology has expanded opportunities for a young artists to thrive in their art style. Art education is also becoming a broad field of study as technology advances.

I've used Paper by 53 to doodle and it grew on me. I now try to draw when I travel or have spare time (not too often unfortunately...). Have to say styluses are highly recommended for iPad painting - even though Steve Jobs mocked them when launching the iPad and made clear the device wouldn't need any. Will try this out!

I haven't yet: sticking to my Bamboo stylus for my drawings right now... But will update if I can get my hands on one of these: promised!

Google's Chairman is not the first one to make the connexion between the future of publishing and tablets but he also adds an insightful point for content curators and editors : the long form is gone and we're not going back to it, he believes. This trend is therefore not just a change of technology platform but also a change of format and reading habits where the ability to quickly add context in a short form will be key. |
Too late? Finally?
I find myself using other Apps like Google Docs or Evernote when I'm on my iPad but maybe Excel could have some use to quickly update a spreadsheet.
What do you think?
