edX recently commissioned a study of nearly 1,000 videos, segmenting them out by by video type and production style, and discovered this among their other findings: Shorter videos are more engaging. Engagement drops after 6 minutes.Videos with a more personal feeling are more effective than high-fidelity studio recordings.

The dramatic increase in online education, particularly Massive Open Online Courses MOOCs, presents researchers, academics, administrators, learners, and policy makers with a range of questions as to the effectiveness of this format of teaching and learning. To date, the impact of MOOCs has been largely disseminated through press releases and university reports. The peer-reviewed research on MOOCs has been minimal. The proliferation of MOOCs in higher education requires a concerted and urgent research agenda. The MOOC Research Initiative MRI will begin to address this research gap by evaluating MOOCsand how they impact teaching, learning, and education in general.

"In November 2011 I was taking one of the first MOOCs from Stanford. At that time, many new MOOCs were being announced and I started Class Central as a way to keep track of them and figure out what I should take next. The website gathers course listings through provider sites, social media, and tips from MOOC providers and users. The figures below are based on these data."

About the data: The edX MOOC data released by Harvard and MIT covered 16 sections of 13 courses from the first year of edX, from fall 2012 to summer 2013. About 475,000 students and about 640,000 registrations are included. Although there were 841,000 registrations in these courses, 200,000 rows of data were deleted by HarvardX and MITx in the de-identification process. De-identification was most likely to remove outliers and extremely active users, which may affect some of the analysis. You can learn more about the de-identification process from the HarvardX and MITx documentation.

Remarkable facts extracted from the release of edX MOOC data one month ago. The most surprising: apparently most MOOC learners are male!

In their excitement to join forces with MOOC providers, university administrators and professors may not be giving enough thought to all the data that’s going to be collected and all the research activities that are going to be pursued. It’s an oversight they may come to regret.
