The Values of Open Pedagogy

The Values of Open Pedagogy | Open Educational Resources | Scoop.it
To support open educational practices, we must understand the meaning of open pedagogy and articulate the values that shape it.
Anaeli Villarreeal's curator insight, May 14, 10:31 PM
This article explores open pedagogy's essence and guiding principles, authored by Amanda McAndrew, Caroline Sinkinson, and Deborah Keyek-Franssen from the University of Colorado. They draw inspiration from educators like Robin de Rosa and Rajiv Jhangiani, advocating for open pedagogy as a dynamic space where theories of learning, teaching, technology, and social justice converge. Rather than offering a rigid definition, they view open pedagogy as a site of praxis, shaping educational practices and structures. Reflecting on their aspirations, they articulate four key habits: responsibility, curiosity, empathy, and participation, which they aim to instill in students. While embracing the potential of open pedagogy to empower students, they also acknowledge the risks, including exacerbating inequalities, and endeavor to navigate these complexities through intentional practice. Ultimately, they seek to cultivate inclusive, participatory learning environments grounded in shared values and aspirations.

Paywall: The Business of Scholarship

Paywall: The Business of Scholarship | Open Educational Resources | Scoop.it
Paywall: The Business of Scholarship is a documentary which focuses on the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 35-40% profit margin associated with the top academic publisher Elsevier and looks at how that profit margin is often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google.
Staying true to the open access model: it is free to stream and download, for private or public use, and maintains the most open CC BY 4.0 Creative Commons designation to ensure anyone regardless of their social, financial or political background will have access.

Open access to scientific publications must become a reality by 2020 - Robert-Jan Smits | Horizon: the EU Research & Innovation magazine | European Commission | Open Educational Resources | Scoop.it
A lot of lip service is being paid to making scientific papers free to access but when it comes to action there is a lot of hypocrisy, according to Robert-Jan Smits, the EU's outgoing director-general for research, science and innovation. He has recently been appointed the EU's special envoy on open access, tasked with helping make all publicly funded research in Europe freely available by 2020.

Technology Enhanced Learning, Research Impact and Open Scholarship by Thomas Cochrane, Petrea Redmond, Linda Corrin

Technology Enhanced Learning, Research Impact and Open Scholarship by Thomas Cochrane, Petrea Redmond, Linda Corrin | Open Educational Resources | Scoop.it
This guest editorial explores the potential impact of alternative metrics and social research networks to enhance Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) research and practice, particularly in the realm of open scholarship. Conventional measures of research impact are based upon a publications’ impact factor. Article or author-level metrics can provide a better view of the contribution to the field of research of a specific research project. However, metrics are based upon citation counts that can take years to accumulate.  This can result in a significant lag between the original research, communicating research outcomes to the wider research community, and research impact. TEL researchers are in a unique position to spearhead the growing movement towards open social scholarship and alternative metrics. Alternative metrics provide a powerful addition to conventional measures of research impact, facilitating a dynamic conversation around TEL research. Social media conversations provide the foundation for a collaborative open Scholarship of Technology Enhanced Learning as both an enhancement and alternative to conventional modes of research impact measurement. This guest editorial outlines key tools that are currently used to measure impact. We argue that a culture of open scholarship enhanced via social media and measured via alternative metrics creates an effective feedback loop between research and practice.

Clear-eyed review of impact of initiative to create OER degrees

Project to drive community colleges' use of open educational resources lowered student spending (even using a more conservative formula to judge those costs). But student awareness of the courses remains limited, and the path to sustainability is unclear.

Open educational resources improve academic performance —

Open educational resources improve academic performance — | Open Educational Resources | Scoop.it
The University of Georgia conducted a large-scale study in which revealed the potential of open educational resources.
Anaeli Villarreeal's curator insight, May 14, 10:33 PM
The impact of open educational resources (OER) is often underestimated, viewed merely as cost-saving measures rather than valuable learning tools. However, a study by the University of Georgia highlighted their potential. Comparing students using commercial textbooks with those using free digital books, the study found that the latter group performed better academically over six years. Students with free books achieved higher grades, with fewer dropouts or failing grades. This suggests that providing necessary materials at the start of courses significantly enhances learning outcomes. As many students struggle to afford expensive textbooks, OER not only alleviate financial burdens but also contribute to improved academic performance and reduced dropout rates, according to the researchers.

I do like the in timeline comments (nod to Perusall!) but from the video on their website, it does not seem to me to be as 'interactive video' as Coursera/Hapyak or even H5P define it.

Perhaps there are features that they are not showing us, but there is not much info on the website. When I want to know about integration with Moodle, or prices I get shoved to a sales form? Might be good for school, but as it looks to me, a little lightweight for highered in its current state. The Emperor's New Clothes?
