Natural History Museums Are Teeming With Undiscovered Species

Natural History Museums Are Teeming With Undiscovered Species | Rainforest CLASSROOM | Scoop.it
Tracking them down is a globe-trotting adventure that rivals any jungle expedition.
The Morpho Institute's insight:

Maybe not QUITE as fun as a jungle expedition, but still amazing to see specimens collected by the great early explorers.  Like time capsules, they "contain records of past ecosystems that are rapidly changing or disappearing. They are archives that provide clues about raging epidemics, environmental pollution, and hidden extinctions. And they are full of unknown species!"

Is Natural History Still Relevant for Conservation Science or Your Classroom?

Is Natural History Still Relevant for Conservation Science or Your Classroom? | Rainforest CLASSROOM | Scoop.it
As conservation science increasingly draws from sophisticated models and genomics, does natural history still have relevance? Benjamin Kilham, a dyslexic who has made significant contributions to bear research, builds a powerful case for field observation in his book, "Out on a Limb."
The Morpho Institute's insight:

AMEN, AMEN, AMEN!!  "...the educational system and academia ignore the potential contributions of many, many children. In natural history, he sees a great equalizer. While not everyone will excel with math or words, anyone can make important observations."

Where have all the naturalists gone?? | Rainforest CLASSROOM | Scoop.it

Those dedicated observers of the natural world in all its complexity are still among us. But they are harder to pick out now; they are men and women, students and citizens.
