What Do You Mean by 'Badges?' | re-mediating assessment

What Do You Mean by 'Badges?' | re-mediating assessment | Rubrics, Assessment and eProctoring in Education | Scoop.it

I was exchanging some emails with an a esteemed educational researcher and administrator about our Big Open Online Course on Educational Assessment and open courses in general and mentioned badges.  In his reply he asked, "what do you mean by 'badges'?"  After an amazing day of progress working with digital badges yesterday, it was a nice reminder of just how new this concept is. So I figured I would reply with a basic explanation and provide some timely updates on one aspect of our badges work.
Digital badges are web-enabled credentials.  Unlike traditional grades, transcripts, certificates, etc., badges can contain specific claims about accomplishments, along with detailed evidence (and links to more evidence) in support of those claims.

* a complement to traditional education ‘certification’,
* capable of accommodating formal or informal pathway for learning,
* representative of hard & soft skills, peer assessment, and ‘stakable lifelong learning’,
* snapshots of learning wherever or however it occurred,
* ‘stealth assessment’!

Initiatives seek to give students permanent online records for skills they have developed that they could then use when applying to college or for jobs.

KF:  The badges approach is especially suited to more open education strategies and begins to recognise that there are sytill areas that do no require formal accreditation.  I suspect the approach has a long way to go before mainstream adoption and will need to address some questions around "assurance of learning" if it is to be picked up more ubiquitiously.  I can see there being a system whereby even your employer can award badges that help you map your learning from experience and training.

To established members of the higher education community, the idea of using digital badges to mark academic accomplishments might seem juvenile, like getting a gold star on a kindergarten alphabet test instead of a real grade. However, many of the academics who are tied to technology see badges as harbingers of an educational revolution, and they might be right.
