Simple virtual world gonorrhea game used for ethical study of why people skip condoms, vaccinations

Simple virtual world gonorrhea game used for ethical study of why people skip condoms, vaccinations | Simulation in Health Sciences Education | Scoop.it

A new game, loosely modeled after the spread of gonorrhea, offers a new way for researchers to study people’s motivations for choosing whether or not to use condoms, get flu shots or otherwise protect themselves from epidemics.

This isn’t the first time researchers have tried using game versions of diseases as a proxy for real life. In 2007, some epidemiologists published studies of how “Corrupted Blood,” a disease in the massive online game “World of Warcraft,” mimicked real-life outbreaks. What’s new about Chen’s game is that it’s a simple game built for doing controlled experiments.

Virtual Genetics Laboratory - SWIFT part 1

The SWIFT project at the University of Leicester (Second World Immersive Future Teaching) has created a virtual genetics lab within the three-dimensional, virtual world of Second Life, to help students studying genetics and biological science. Phase one of SWIFT uses this virtual lab to help first year undergraduates become acclimatised to working in a laboratory; in particular to learn about the main pieces of equipment and the many health and safety factors involved.

In this video, PD Alchemi (Dr Paul Rudman) and Trinity Quicksand (Dr Suzanne Lavelle) introduce the SWIFT project and the virtual lab.

SWIFT is a three year research project by the departments of Genetics and Beyond Distance Research Alliance, and is funded by the Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS). The Principal Investigator is Prof.Annette Cashmore, researcher Dr Paul Rudman, genetics teacher/consultant Dr Suzanne Lavelle. Prof. Gilly Salmon was research director for the early part of SWIFT.

The untapped potential of virtual game worlds to shed light on real world epidemics.

Simulation models are of increasing importance within the field of applied epidemiology. However, very little can be done to validate such models or to tailor their use to incorporate important human behaviours. In a recent incident in the virtual world of online gaming, the accidental inclusion of a disease-like phenomenon provided an excellent example of the potential of such systems to alleviate these modelling constraints. We discuss this incident and how appropriate exploitation of these gaming systems could greatly advance the capabilities of applied simulation modelling in infectious disease research.

The Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds CON2012

The Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds CON2012 | Simulation in Health Sciences Education | Scoop.it

The Information Resources Management College (iCollege) of the National Defense University established the Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds (FCVW) in July 2007. The consortium was created to explore multi-agency and intra- agency collaboration using the robust capabilities of virtual worlds, examining best practices across multiple sectors. The objective of the consortium is to help government agencies to share resources, training, and experience; leverage outreach capabilities and practices; connect to new partners and business opportunities; and demonstrate the benefits for virtual worlds’ collaborative capabilities

Virtual campus: online universities are the future of higher education

Virtual campus: online universities are the future of higher education | Simulation in Health Sciences Education | Scoop.it
In higher education, we’ve been talking about “e-learning” for years.

"The future of today’s universities probably lies between the “massification” of online education – in which thousands or millions more students can learn the basic and common courses on an online adaptive system – and small tutorial sessions, utilising the benefits of face to face teaching.

From such “disruption” the best education will emerge if we manage to marry the interactive, intelligent and immersive possibilities of virtual worlds and instant digital communications tools with the talents and passion of great teachers."

KF:  There are special implications for a range of disciplines - health sciences, performing arts, spatial sciences, etc where the experience of different physical realities has to play an important role in learning.  The use of MUVEs, augmented reality and virtual reality is yet to be realised broadly in many of these areas.  There will be a necessary development of thinking around how to utilise these technologies.
