80 Ways To Find Your Next Big Startup Idea

80 Ways To Find Your Next Big Startup Idea | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
You want to build the next big thing? The good news is that it's not beyond your skills and capabilities if you truly believe you have something great to offer the world. The bad news is that most ...
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

This is a great list and the piece starts with great quotes. I've started 4 companies. The biggest generated more than $16M in specialty gift sales and put products you may know into our popular lexicon (Magnetic Poetry Kit, Zen Board now Buddha Board).

One idea I use to find the next thing to work on is creating a thought experiment. Thought experiments always start with a question. Last night I worked on an idea sparked by an interesting question from my tenure as an Ecommerce Director:

Q:
Is there a way to TEST before spending money?

Quirky.com and Threadless harness the power of crowds to only product ideas with enough built in Day One support success is all but assured.

My question was about how to create a process requiring little investment in time or capital that could help reduce the risk of any capial spent.

I was able to answer that question in the affirmative and hope to share the idea soon (still in the could tell you but then would have to kill you stage :).

Why Slideshare ROCKS Content Marketing and SEO [for Startups]

Why Slideshare ROCKS Content Marketing and SEO [for Startups] | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

Slideshare may be the most powerful content marketing tool around. Few realize its power so your Internet marketing team's Slideshare use could be disruptive.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Slideshare Is Content Marketing For Startups
If you are a startup and you are NOT putting all those slide presentations you are creating to get money and define your market on Slideshare you are NUTS. I've met with many startups and they are all overwhelmed and under-contented.

The last thing any of these geniuses think about is creating online communication to define their passion. They ALL create presentations and maybe, just maybe, taking an extra 10 minutes to load those presentations up to Slideshare may kill the proverbial two birds with a single stone.

Sharing your slides on Slideshare isn't as robust as I would like Startups to attack content marketing, but it beats NOTHING. AND I'm betting most will find it easy to accomplish save for one issue - protecting secrets.

Here's the thing. What you are doing isn't as secret as you think (by half) and the more feedback you get the sooner the better your chances of success. If something feels uniquely yours remove it from your presentation or mask it. If you are smart enough to create a cool app or the next generation SaaS tool then you can figure a way to get your content on Slideshare. Right?

Get Meetings With People Too Busy To See You via @Forbes | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
Asking, “Can I have coffee with you to pick your brain?” is probably the worst possible way to get a meeting with someone with a busy schedule.  Here’s a better approach.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Great advice here on how to "sell" the meeting.

Selling Everything For My Startup Cure Cancer Starter

Selling Everything For My Startup Cure Cancer Starter | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

I'm SELLING EVERYTHING (house, & collections of books, art, records, cds, furniture, bicycles) to benefit Cure Cancer Starter. Sale starts Sunday June 2. Please tell your friends.

Not as far along as I wanted to be (lol), but here is the beginning of, as a good friend coined it, "Selling Out For Curing Cancer" sale will work: http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2013/06/selling-out-to-help-cure-cancer.html

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Cure Cancer Starter & Story of Cancer Foundation
There comes a point in every startup where you have to "burn the boats". You have to push all the chips into the middle of the table, go all in. That point for me is NOW.

I'm funding creation of CureCancerStarter.org (http://www.curecancerstarter.org ) with my Marketing Director Salary at Atlantic BT. Atlantic BT is helping by matching my investment. Cure Cancer Starter will be the first crowdfunding platform dedicated to cancer research, created by a cancer survivor (me) and working with great cancer research institutes (Duke, UNC, City of Hope, Roswell Park, University of Wisconsin Carbone & others soon).

The platform is FREE for cancer centers to use as my way of saying THANK YOU for saving my life (more than once). Free for cancer patients their friends and family to use as my way of saying thanks for being there for me.

As is always the case development costs are 2x what we thought so I need to raise some CASH. Tomorrow my SELL EVERYTHING sale starts. Will be selling my house and collections of books, records (the old fashioned kind), CDs, furniture, bicycles and anything and everything I own.

Time to go all in. You can help by letting your friends know about my SELLING EVERYTHING sale (live on Sunday June 2nd and house on market Monday June 3) and volunteering to help Cure Cancer Starter and the Tech Cures Cancer Movement (details tomorrow).
