COVID-19 shocks food supply chain, spurs creativity and search for resiliency

COVID-19 shocks food supply chain, spurs creativity and search for resiliency | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

Short of wasting all this food, isn’t the food industry set up to donate products to food banks or large school systems feeding their communities? How could the supply chain be altered to make the industry more sustainable?

Yes, some of this is happening. But again, this requires a different distribution capacity and takes time to adjust to. Food waste has been a big problem in the U.S. food system with many causes. According to a study by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, globally around one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted along the food chain from production to consumption. This is exacerbated in the pandemic. Our food system travels long distances, on average 1,200-1,500 miles, to get to the plate. It’s a complex problem that requires creative solutions from productivity, ecosystem diversity, supply chain, technology and consumer behavior issues.

Quinn explained that the Blücher team had designed the drainage solutions to ensure that they were as sustainable as possible, all the way through from production materials to use and end of life.

The stainless steel Blücher use is 100 per cent recyclable. However in a drainage system it’s not just the material it’s made from that is important, but the design can also have an effect on water consumption.

“Breweries can really see the value in Blücher HygienicPro because they know how much water can be saved with this new technology,” Quinn said.

Why Innovation is Key to Food Waste Reduction in the Supply Chain

Why Innovation is Key to Food Waste Reduction in the Supply Chain | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

Improving visibility across the supply chain means knowing where food waste is generated. It puts organizations like yours in a position to identify possible causes and take preventative action.
This demands the capture of complex data from multiple sources – in real time – from the entire enterprise. Vital information that Quality Management and EHS Systems are designed to deliver.

MSC suspends Argentine anchovy certification

MSC suspends Argentine anchovy certification | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

PIRatE Lab's insight:
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certificate for Argentine anchovy fishery has been suspended after it failed to show evidence for progress against its conditions, a MSC spokeswoman told Undercurrent News.

The Argentine anchovy fishery was initially MSC certified in August 2011 and obtained its recertification in December 2016.

This fishery has been improving its sustainability standard since it first engaged with the MSC program, but MSC requires fisheries to have a high sustainability standard, according to MSC. "To do so, fisheries under assessment can be certified with conditions; these conditions are a key element to improve beyond a minimum tolerable sustainability level. In the Argentine anchovy fishery case, it was suspended not as a result of bad practices, but because the fishery has not yet submitted information to demonstrate progress in its plan of action to address one condition of this certification," the MSC spokeswoman told Undercurrent.

According to the MSC general certification requirement, the "fishery client" has 90 days from the date of the suspension to submit a corrective action plan addressing the cause of suspension, which will need to be accepted by the certifier.

If this information is not submitted or is not acceptable, the fishery should withdraw the MSC program. According to the MSC fishery certification requirements, the Argentine anchovy fishery is still certified and has 90 days to submit information to the certifier to get over this suspension, MSC said. "The MSC program is under voluntary basis, so, the client needs to demonstrate its work in addressing the condition," the MSC spokeswoman noted.

Pathogens boosted by food additive

Pathogens boosted by food additive | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Epidemic strains of the bacterium Clostridium difficile have now been found to grow on unusually low levels of the food additive trehalose, providing a possible explanation for C. difficile outbreaks since 2001.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
A great example of the so often hard to quantify unintended consequences of a lax regulatory system.  This is one example of why precautionary principles are a safer way to go in terms of regulating food and food systems.  The notion that we need merely to use something until we have a confirmed problem with it is often an unwise approach when it comes to factors that can impact our ecosystem or organism health and well being.
