Sustainability Science
How might we keep the lights on, water flowing, and natural world vaguely intact? It starts with grabbing innovative ideas/examples to help kick down our limits and inspire a more sustainable world. We implement with rigorous science backed by hard data.

Suicide and Depression Among Farmers Linked to Pesticides » EcoWatch

Suicide and Depression Among Farmers Linked to Pesticides » EcoWatch | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Studies have shown a possible link between heavy or prolonged pesticide use and depression and suicide among farmers who use certain classes of pesticides extensively

PIRatE Lab's insight:

Interesting.  The devil here is in the details.  Epidemiology of many migrant populations is notoriously difficult.

Nuno Gaspar de Oliveira's curator insight, October 6, 2014 5:17 PM

Only three of the seven pesticides that produced a positive link are still registered for use with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and those are currently being reviewed by the EPA. But while those pesticides may be phased out—Monsanto, Syngenta and Bayer, three of the largest pesticide producers, say they don’t currently make them—mental health problems could be connected to newer chemicals, such as neonocotinoids, widely connected with bee dieoffs in recent years by interfering with bees’ brains and nervous systems. No studies have been done on the effect of neonocotinoids on humans. Matt Peters was using neonocontinoids when he committed suicide.

U.S. to revamp nutrition labels | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Thursday will propose the first major revamp of nutrition labels in more than two decades, an update that would emphasize calorie information, include the amount of added sugars and revise serving sizes to reflect how people really consume food.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

This is long overdue.

Organic foods are more nutritious, according to review of 343 studies

Organic foods are more nutritious, according to review of 343 studies | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Most everyone who has ever selected their fruits and vegetables from the "organic" section while grocery shopping probably thought they were doing something good for their bodies and the environment.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Hmmm...this is sure to get the Prius-driving crowd all in a tither.

One of the chief arguments offered by proponents of organic foods (aka it is healthier for you) seems to have some validity.  And this a meta analysis no less.

But...and this is a BIG BUT, I still say the main reason one should consider opting for a more organic diet is the well supported fact that organic food generally has a lighter impact on the planet.  I know all the arguments that we "cannot meet our existing nutritional demands if we were to somehow instantly go 100% organic," etc., etc.  But the reduced impact from organic is usually (except for bananas) a kinder thing for Mama Earth.

Crunch away you granola heads!

Bangladesh Tragedy Reinforces Need for Corporate Action to Ensure Health and Safety in Supply Chains

Bangladesh Tragedy Reinforces Need for Corporate Action to Ensure Health and Safety in Supply Chains | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

Today, on International Workers’ Day, an international celebration of the labour movement, the UN Global Compact is urging companies to step up efforts and engage in the fight to improve occupational health and safety standards.

EcoVadis's curator insight, May 8, 2013 10:25 AM

An interesting move from the United Global Compact to focus on down-to-earth CSR issues and advocate for the adoption of better health safety standards in the supply chain. This is a little reactive after major incidents such as the one at the Tazreen factory fire and Rana Plaza factory collapse that led to a 800+ death toll (not 400 as mentioned), but welcome.
