Fight brews over California measure to reduce plastic waste

Environmentalists and industry are at odds over a November ballot initiative that would reduce single-use plastics and polystyrene food containers.
PIRatE Lab's curator insight, April 17, 2022 11:28 AM
This has been way too long a time in coming.  While this step would be progress, we really need a closed loop economy which considers material and energy streams beyond plastic/hydrocarbons.
Gizelle K Monicco's comment, April 19, 2022 12:19 PM
As unfortunate as it is, seeing overflowing trashcans and just pure trash almost everywhere is CA is very common. Living in Los Angeles, by downtown, I can say that I see my daily share of trash almost everywhere I look, and a lot of it is plastic bottles or plastic products. We can definitely reduce that

Unilever sets out new actions to fight climate change

Unilever sets out new actions to fight climate change | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
With the temporary decrease in global carbon emission this year, more giant companies such as Unilever are switching to a sustainable business model.

Multinational company Unilever joins WWF in calling on Australian leaders to set the economy on course to a zero-carbon future, targeting net-zero emission from all products by 2039. This target will be eleven years ahead of the 2050 Paris Agreement deadline.

The multinational company aims to have the greenhouse (GHG) footprints across its operation. To accelerate the action, Unilever will collectively invest €1 billion (AUD$1.89 billion) in a new dedicated Climate and Nature Fund.

Coronavirus will realign investors’ priorities toward a new normal of sustainability | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
It’s becoming clearer by the hour that the coronavirus pandemic represents an unprecedented global threat to both public health and global economies. The speed of the crisis and the change to our everyday existence, as well as the threat to our most vulnerable, is astonishing and has all of us reflecting on our values and investments.

But even in these dark early days, it’s possible to make out what could be a silver lining: The crisis points to the potential of a new normal that’s better for our climate future as investors reweight their portfolios in light of current events.

Newsom orders California regulators to end sales of new gas powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035

California will outlaw sales of new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday, a move he says will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35% in the nation’s most populous state.

His plan would not ban people from owning gas-powered cars or selling them on the used car market. But it would end the sales of all new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks in the state of nearly 40 million people.

“Pull away from the gas pumps,” Newsom said in announcing his executive order to state regulators to draw up guidelines. “Let us no longer be victims of geopolitical dictators that manipulate global supply chains and global markets.”

Why has the U.S. done so much worse than Europe in controlling the coronavirus? Preferring medical miracles, Americans reject simple public health steps.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
A similar phenomenon seems to exist in other sectors of American society.  Take endangered species management or biodiversity protection. We love to dole out for tigers and the like, but loathe the idea of ordinances that reduce tree loss or urban sprawl.

How can Atlanta get to 100% green?

How can Atlanta get to 100% green? | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
More than 100 cities have pledged to run on 100% renewable energy and signed onto the Sierra Club’s “Ready for 100” campaign. But turning commitment into action is where the real work begins, and Atlanta might be the ultimate test case.
Omar Elizondo's curator insight, May 16, 2019 8:12 AM
Like any other city, Atlanta is woven with power lines, trams and buses. The electricity that makes Atlanta run comes mostly from coal, natural gas and nuclear energy. Only 6% to 8% comes from renewable sources.
