Sustainability Science
How might we keep the lights on, water flowing, and natural world vaguely intact? It starts with grabbing innovative ideas/examples to help kick down our limits and inspire a more sustainable world. We implement with rigorous science backed by hard data.

Here’s why new EPA chief Pruitt is ‘absolutely wrong’ about CO2 and climate change

Here’s why new EPA chief Pruitt is ‘absolutely wrong’ about CO2 and climate change | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Scott Pruitt says there's no proof that carbon dioxide pollution is causing the Earth to heat up. Well-established science — and a scientist who's a fellow Republican — says that's flat-out wrong.

This...is...simply...deranged.

Have environmentalists failed West Virginia? | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Environmentalism is not elitist. Too many of us in the environmental community, however, are.

The Corporate “Free Speech” Racket

The Corporate “Free Speech” Racket | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
How corporations are using the First Amendment to destroy government regulation.

Via pdeppisch
PIRatE Lab's insight:

While there is a fair amount of editorializing, particularly at the end, this is a nice in-depth piece on how various legal and corporate thinkers have used "free speech" to try to move to a more libertarian/laissez-faire regulatory world here in the United States.  One wherein Exxon is equal to you and considered equal under the eyes of the law.  It is a bizarre, rabbit hole-type tale.  But one that we must deal with if we are to have effect regulation/a just social contract.

Scott Pruitt could end up being one of Trump’s most consequential Cabinet picks

Scott Pruitt could end up being one of Trump’s most consequential Cabinet picks | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Decades from now, we could look back on this as one of Donald Trump’s most consequential Cabinet picks.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
A great piece that jives with almost most of my colleague's (and my own) concerns with this anti-fact, anti-science, pro-pollution administrator just appointed to head the EPA last week.  The only key area left out is the impact on the culture of the agency: his appointment is likely to drive more effective, objective public servants from the system via frustration and inaction/inability to meet their public mandates.

An inconvenient truth: Does responsible consumption benefit corporations more than society?

An inconvenient truth: Does responsible consumption benefit corporations more than society? | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Are environmental and social problems such as global warming and poverty the result of inadequate governmental regulations or does the burden fall on our failure as consumers to make better consumption choices? According to a new study, responsible consumption shifts the burden for solving global problems from governments to consumers and ultimately benefits corporations more than society.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Very interesting thesis.  Another example of the need for strong, effective democratic systems with accountability to citizens, not necessarily consumers.

New package of proposals seeks to water down regulations governing coal ash and other forms of harmful waste
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Effective pushed towards sustainability are hindered when we remove the "stick."  I very much support and favor the "carrot," but with hard rules/regulation in certain areas we get thing like much of the state of W Virginia unable to drink their tap water.
