Sustainable aviation fuel: A journey to greener skies

Sustainable aviation fuel: A journey to greener skies | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
About 15 years ago, Finnish energy company Neste decided to change its course. Since 1948, Neste was in the oil business, but the health of the planet and future generations began to weigh on the company’s leadership.

With much of the world still viewing climate change as an inconvenient truth, Neste’s executive committee and board of directors decided to embark on an ambitious transformation from fossil fuels to renewables. Now, Neste is a global leader in renewable fuels and the third most sustainable company in the world, according to Corporate Knights.

Are Sustainable Fuels A Viable Option For Aviation?

Are Sustainable Fuels A Viable Option For Aviation? | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Ask the Editors: Sustainable aviation fuels are technically viable today; it is their economic viability that remains in question.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This is a classic example of the common, partial assessment of sustainable practices. In these approaches, the onus is always on the solution/sustainable option to solve the entirety of the problem.

It is true that currently renewable aviation fuels cost more than the federally-subsidized fossil fuel production system. But this assumes that the damage caused by existing emissions from fossil fuels are "free" and do not factor into the cost of the traditional fuels.

We need to internalized the externalities people.

Wyoming bill would all but outlaw clean energy, by forbidding utilities from using it

Wyoming bill would all but outlaw clean energy, by forbidding utilities from using it | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Aiming to keep Wyoming electric utilities dependent on coal, the legislature proposes a bill preventing them from using the state's abundant wind power to in-state customers.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This is just insane.  First Pruitt's comments about California's permission to manage it's own airspeed and now this.

Stung by Keystone reversal, Canadian province doubles down on renewable energy

Stung by Keystone reversal, Canadian province doubles down on renewable energy | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
After getting a “major wake-up call” from the U.S. government in its rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline project, the leader of the Canadian province of Alberta announced an aggressive climate-change plan Sunday that sets emission limits for the oil sands and begins the transition from coal to renewable electricity sources.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Wow.  To be sure a press conference is not a policy and words are much cheaper than action.  But for the first time in a decade, the central government ministries and provincial offices in Canada (save for Quebec, which has been pushing this for a while) seem to actually be taking climate change seriously.

Let's congratulate our Canadian friends for taking this action.

Fingers crossed that this isn't just a collection of empty promises.

Renewable Diesel Maker Neste Lines Up Four Calif. Distributors

Renewable Diesel Maker Neste Lines Up Four Calif. Distributors  | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
“Neste brings great value to our company by offering a consistent supply of quality renewable diesel with a definite branding potential, along with an exclusive supply arrangement for our designated marketing area,” comments Ron Van De Pol, president of Van De Pol Petroleum.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
The shine of biodiesel and its brethren has turned dull over the past few years, limited by the availability and reliability of supply.  Most of the consistent stream has been snapped up by larger entities with larger fleets.  More supply should trickle down to the consumer market and help further wean us off of petroleum-based fuels.

Who owns the wind? We do, Wyoming says, and it's taxing those who use it

Who owns the wind? We do, Wyoming says, and it's taxing those who use it | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
The world is ready to pay for more renewable energy, and Wyoming has lots of wind. Who owns it? Wyoming decided it did.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Somehow, I don't think anyone ever asked oil: "tell us how much we can tax you before we drive you out of business."

Can you say double standard for renewables vs. fossil fuels.
