"There have been many school reform trends over the past few years: student response systems, video games for math, mobile phones for learning—but none have completely transformed the notion of learning like the flipped classroom. Flipped learning, in essence, turns the idea of traditional classroom instruction on its head by asking students to watch videos of teacher lectures for homework, then apply the lesson with the teacher in the classroom."

The question many ask is if students have the skills to manage their time to watch videos at home and if in-class work does improve students success in the class.  Many ask if this approached is truly embraced by students and parents and if the flipped classroom is here to stay. To help others to better understand the concept of flipped learning, Bergmann and Sam created an "open house" where they invited other educators to see how flipped learning works and to hear how students feel about it.

Announcing Flip Your Classroom Day: A Global Initiative

September 6, 2013, the Flipped Learning Network™ hosts Flip Your Classroom Day.

On 9-6-2013 educators across the globe will take a pledge to flip one lesson to experience Flipped Learning, with the expectation this leads to further flipped units or an entire course. Based on a survey conducted by the Speak Up National Research Project (Fall, 2012), we estimate that only 3% of teachers in the U.S. know about or "do" flipped learning. Yet  27% of principals indicated their teachers wanted to try it this year! So thank you for joining the growing ranks of educators who are moving from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered learning environment.

"Carrie Fruin has 25 years of experience teaching chemistry, physical science and physics in K-12 classrooms.
Here, she writes about her foray into flipping a classroom, the unexpected backlash, and how she fixed the flop".

Many students don't like the freedom of learning on their own and prefer the face-to-face learning approach.  Teachers might encounter students who resist to move from the traditional classroom to self-instruct.  In this article, Fruin encourages teachers not to give up and gives ideas on how to avoid problems, and how to fix them if your flipped classroom already has them.

5 Flipped Classroom Issues (And Solutions) For Teachers - Edudemic

5 Flipped Classroom Issues (And Solutions) For Teachers - Edudemic | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

"Have you been thinking about flipping your classroom this fall? Flipping can let you make the most of face-to-face time with your students. Rather than taking class time to introduce content and using homework to review concepts, flip the process so that students gain basic knowledge at home and then create, collaborate, and make connections in school.

"Creating video used to be out of reach for most teachers. It was expensive and required skills that could take years to master. Fortunately, it is easier and faster than ever to create videos for your students, especially with iPad. It also plays a big part in flipping your class, as it provides students with multimodal access to content and the ability to progress at their own pace. By giving students the opportunity to view and playback lessons via video, you free up class time for more cognitively difficult tasks. At EdTechTeacher, we have worked with many educators on flipping their classes and have noticed some common issues that often thwart their initial forays."
