3 Linkbuilding Tactics That Many SMBs Ignore - Relevance

3 Linkbuilding Tactics That Many SMBs Ignore - Relevance | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
INFOGRAPHICS

Infographics are an important tactic for SMBs because they are cheap to create and can be shared quickly across social media and with influencers. One of the best tactics is to use infographics as guest content. Reach out to a couple of hundred websites or bloggers and show them the infographic. Then, you can ask them if they’d like you to write a custom intro so that they can share the graphic on their website (with a link back to yours, of course).

GUEST POSTING

Guest posting is one of the most powerful link building methods because it gives you an opportunity to network with other industry leaders.

EGO BAIT

The last tactic that many SMBs ignore is ego bait. Ego bait is a general term for content that is used to appeal to the ego of other business owners. This ego bait might include resources pages that include links to other companies or ‘top XYZ’ posts that celebrate the top websites in a particular field.

Shareable vs. Linkable Content: The Differences You Need to Know | HigherVisibility

Shareable vs. Linkable Content: The Differences You Need to Know | HigherVisibility | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Unlike shareable content, linkable content is something people will post/link back to on their website. Infographics, resource guides, heavily researched articles, demonstrations, and tutorials can all be different forms of linkable content. By creating shareable content, you bolster brand engagement and put yourself on the map with users by existing among users. You also drive shares and engagements up, with means better exposure and more publicity.

Ideally, linkable content is evergreen, catered to a specific audience, and thorough. For example, a highly researched and informational infographic about the life cycle of clothing items before they end up in landfills is something that an environmental or sanitation department website will likely link to. By creating linkable content, you assert yourself as an authority and reputable resource worth referencing. As a result, having linkable content results in links, and a strong, high quality link profile is never a bad thing in Google’s eyes.

Of course, you need both.

What Link Building Success Really Looks Like - Moz | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Building lots of links to lots of pieces of content sustainably, while taking other important factors into consideration, can result in an increase in domain-wide rankings over time.

Okay, but what did this do for the company? Did they see an increase in rankings for valuable terms, or just terms related to the content itself? Over the duration of these link building campaigns, the client saw their most important keywords move from positions 3 to 1 and 3 to 2, respectively. The client said: "A position change from 3 to 1 on our top keyword meant a 15% increase in sales."

Microsites and SEO: Why B2B Link Building Matters - Kapost

Microsites and SEO: Why B2B Link Building Matters - Kapost | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Benefit 1: Gain keyword authority. By creating a valuable piece of content that is relevant to your target audience and optimized for SEO, a link building component can help you move up in the rankings for a specific keyword.

Benefit 2: Build partnerships and authentic relationships within your industry. Again, while relevancy and quality is the number one factor for SEO, building trust and loyalty for your brand is a powerful way to build links and, eventually, domain authority. Publishing a list of industry leaders gives your brand an opportunity to engage with a variety of top-tier brands.

Benefit 3: Exposure to new and relevant audiences. Publishing a report that calls out specific brands within an industry is a ripe opportunity to get in front of new audiences.
Marteq's insight:

It's a known yet underused tactic.

How To Create Linkable Assets Without the Content Commitment - Ahrefs | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
To create a successful resource page, you just have to do two things:

Link to content your audience will appreciate and find useful
One-up any resource pages your competitors have built
You can one-up your competition by creating a similar, but more comprehensive resource page than what they’ve already built. You can also one-up them by thinking outside of the box and doing something new.

We’ll look at both methods. In either case, think of it as making the perfect mixtape for your audience. You want to include their favorite hits, but you also want to include some obscure tracks they’d never hear otherwise.

Why Link Building Is NOT the Future of SEO - QuickSprout

Why Link Building Is NOT the Future of SEO - QuickSprout | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
By no means am I saying that you should ignore SEO. Optimizing your code for search engines, building links when you have spare time, and growing your social media channels are all activities you should continually do.

But they shouldn’t be your main focus.

You should be shifting the majority of your focus to building a great product or service as that is what users want. And when you aren’t building, you should be creating great content.

You need to provide content so great that people will want to not only read it but also bookmark it, share it, and tell their friends about it. Your content should be so detailed and helpful that no competitor would dare to copy you as it would take too much time and energy.

In addition, you should be signing up for Google Webmaster Tools and continually analyzing your click-through rates. You can get this data by clicking on “search traffic” in the navigation bar and then clicking on “search analysis.”

Why Link-Building Isn't Really Against Google's Guidelines - Profs

Why Link-Building Isn't Really Against Google's Guidelines - Profs | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Condensed...

Building links can't be against Google's guidelines. If it were, Google wouldn't be using it as a ranking factor.  What is against Google's guidelines is building "links intended to manipulate…a site's ranking in Google search results."

And to get a more revealing look at the spirit behind that, you can take a look at this little tidbit that's been in Google's guidelines since 2003: "Another useful test is to ask, 'Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?'"

We can play semantics and say that we should focus on "link-earning" instead of "link-building," but that just distracts from the issue. Like everything before it, that will probably just lead misguided SEOs toward another round of penalties.

Link Building Basics for International Search Engine Optimization - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingTechAlert

Link Building Basics for International Search Engine Optimization - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingTechAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Advanced/ Digest...

Whatever your target countries are, you should make sure that you have websites that are based in that country linking to your pages and domain. Target specific regions for link building efforts by soliciting and acquiring links from target ccTLDs that match the country or region you are targeting. For instance, if you were targeting India, you would want to make sure that several websites with the domain .in are providing backlinks.

To help with your efforts, there are several SEO tools that allow you to analyze your backlinks by location and/or ccTLD, which should make this easier, especially if your SEO campaigns are targeting multiple countries.

Find popular sites in the country you are targeting and create a plan to solicit links from them. This applies not only to larger news sites, but also to bloggers who are often more likely to provide a link to your pages.

Don't forget directory sites as well, many of which can be country-specific.

I thought this would've been a bit harder than describe. Almost a no brainer if you have markets outside of your country boundaries.

Regina Jessy's curator insight, November 6, 2014 11:27 PM
used by search engines

Before embarking on a link building effort, it's critical to understand the elements of a link used by the search engines as well as how those elements factor into the weighting of links in the algorithms. Search engines use links in many different ways. While we don't know all the link attributes measured by the engines, through analysis of patent applications, years of experience and hands-on testing, we can draw some intelligent assumptions that hold up in the real world. Below is a list of notable factors worthy of consideration. These signals, and many more, are considered by professional SEOs when measuring link value and a site's link profile.

Link Building on a Budget - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingTechAlert

Link Building on a Budget - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingTechAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Have more time than money, but want to beef up your backlink profile? It can be done. These four strategies will help you, over time, become far more resistant to algorithm changes and diversify your traffic sources to increase rankings and traffic.

Basic/ Condensed...

1. Directories

Make sure you are included in a handful of quality, general directories and finding the key niche directories and getting included in those. See "Major Search Engines and Directories" for a shortlist of general directories I tend to like. Only DMOZ is free in this list however but I promise, this is the only section of link building that will require any budget at all (which is why the title includes "on a budget" and not "free").

2. Lists

Getting your company included in top lists can be great for both link building and reputation/authority. Fortunately, most lists are easy to find and it becomes increasingly simply if they are annually or monthly produced. The perk to regularly updated lists is that you don't have to go begging to be included in one the writer may have written long ago and since forgotten about.

3. Ego Baiting

The best part of ego baiting is that it works even when the person knows what you're doing. I get requests for interviews or guest blog posts and I know that the company simply wants me to push that interview out socially or mention it in our blog. Do I do it? Yes. Why? Because I'm a rather big fan of Me and I can guarantee you're a fan of You and the people you engage... they like themselves too.

4. Create Good Content

It's a crazy notion but one of the best link building strategies is to create quality content that people want to link to. What we need to be aware of is that people aren't going to link to your homepage as reliably as they will to content they find helpful or that they feel will be helpful to their readers. The key then is determining what type of content to write.

Link Building 101: Competitor Analysis - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

Link Building 101: Competitor Analysis - Search Engine Watch  | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Competitor backlink analysis is great – you get the initial research into the industry done, it helps you understand the competition, and it gives you a tidy list of high opportunity links.

Key excerpt...

To recap the advice for these steps:

- Don't phone-in the list of competitors. Spend time doing research and investigation, giving yourself a well thought out and understood list of potential competitors.

- Information you should be examining in a backlink analysis:

  --> Total number of links

  --> Number of unique linking domains

  --> Anchor Text usage and variance

  --> Fresh/incoming links

  --> Recently lost links

  --> Page Performance (via top pages)

  --> Link quality (via manual examination)

- Additionally, think creatively while looking through competitors' backlinks. Think about:

  --> Which resources/pages performed well

  --> Which resources/pages performed poorly

  --> Commonalities in competitor's link profiles

  --> Differences in competitor's link profiles

  --> Strategies likely used to acquire links
