Automattic revamps and open-sources WordPress.com - VentureBeat

Automattic revamps and open-sources WordPress.com - VentureBeat | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Automattic, the creator of WordPress, has big news to share.

Today the company relaunched WordPress.com, the hosted version of its content manager used by up to 25 percent of the Web (including VB).

On top of that, Automattic is open-sourcing WordPress.com and it’s launching an official Mac app, with Windows and Linux support apparently coming soon. Lots of news today.

At once, WordPress.com is taking a major departure from the WordPress core, replacing PHP with JavaScript and swapping the admin design for a simplified look. And yet, WordPress.com is now open-sourced just like its .org counterpart.

Are you a WordPress user? If so, you know that your plugin directory is your treasury. Here are some plugin gems marketers should have in their treasure trove.

Digest...

1. uSquare: A Fully Responsive and Multipurpose WordPress Plugin

uSquare represents a grid layout that can be used to present your content in a new and exciting way. It has a great minimalistic chessboard layout. This layout consists of an expanding square, which can be used to represent various types of content. You can use it to present your team, products, services, posts, and anything that comes up.

2. Royal Slider: Responsive Touch Slider Plugin for Your WordPress Website

There are already dozen slider plugins launched for the WordPress platform, but not many of them are as useful as Royal Slider. It is highly customizable and touch-friendly. It is clean-coded and allows you to implement slideshows consisted of multiple layers as well as video material. It is well-designed and compatible for all small devices with retina displays. It has been tested on Mac, PC, iPad2, iPhone4, HTC Desire, Lumia 920, Surface, and BlackBerry.

3. Social Network Tabs: Social-Sharing Buttons for Every WordPress Website

This plugin is possibly the greatest social sharing WordPress plugin so far. Having your website content shared and followed on various social networks can increase your website traffic. Social Network Tabs covers 17 different social networks and supports 70 different social features. It is extremely responsive and doesn’t make much impact on your page-load time. Aside the broad list of social networks it covers, its responsiveness and the small amount of resources it pulls are what make it quite powerful. This is one of the most popular and top-selling plugins for the last four months.

4. LiveChat: Beautiful Live Chat Plugin for Customer and Sale Support

LiveChat is a beautiful and responsive plugin for your WordPress website. It can be implemented on any WordPress website for customer and sale support, and it has a lot of customization options. It is an open source plugin, and it holds a wide assortment of features. Aside the typography options, you can customize the visual layout of the whole message box. It is fully responsive and an awesome addition to your plugin collection.

5. Frontend Builder: WordPress Content Assembler

This is the freshest plugin launched by Shindiri Studios dating from August 5. The Frontend Builder allows you to design a webpage on your website without having to know advanced HTML or PHP coding. It consists out of 18 elements (shortcodes) with around 20 customization options each. All elements can be placed on a webpage by simply using the basic drag-and-drop method, without having to worry about positioning the element. However, it is better to follow some basic rules in Web design.

5 Essential WordPress Plugins To Boost Your Search Rankings - Jeffbullas's Blog | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Search engines provide free traffic. So ranking high in Google is vital on the web. Here are 5 essential WordPress plugins to boost your search rankings.

Condensed...

WordPress SEO by Yoast is a tool that will assist by analyzing all of your content to ensure that your keywords are being used properly.

The All in One SEO Pack is a SEO plugin that doesn’t just focus on getting one aspect done, but does many things. It does things such as optimizing tags, ensuring keyword density, and much more.

The Google Analyticator tool gives you the chance to review every single details about your traffic.

SEO Friendly Image is a tool to optimize your images. Images can create some pretty big problems for a site if they are not optimized properly. A lot of webmasters don’t even bother to properly tag them, which means that search engines have no way to index them or even know what they are about.

The SEO Content Control plugin goes through all of your content and will point out any pieces that are considered weak in SEO. This gives you the chance to make any necessary changes to allow the page to get ranked as high as possible.

SEO Best Practices: Setting Up a Blog - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

SEO Best Practices: Setting Up a Blog - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Blogging should be a part of any sound marketing plan. You need to create engagement and provide the ability for people to share content coming from your company. Here's how you can set yourself up to realize positive SEO results from a blog.

Condensed...

Blog on a Subdirectory

I believe that promoting content that resides "on" the website is a good thing because you can earn (deep) links and provide balance to your link profile. And, I believe that having thought-leadership content that is closely associated with your brand (resides, again, on the domain) is a good thing.

Blog on a Subdomain

The nice thing about having a blog on a sub-domain is that it will also piggyback on the authority of your root website (hopefully you already have some authority on your root domain) and posts there can rank, without the need to build up the authority for a new website.

Blog on a Separate Domain

I typically discourage these types of initiatives, for many reasons – not the least of which is the amount of effort that would need to go into making this new web presence gain any amount of trust/traction or authority.

Blog on WordPress.com or Blogger

Are you tying in the "thought leadership" to the brand? Are you adding fresh content to the domain? Are you aiding your abilities to provide an additional "official brand presence" to the SERPs? (Perhaps, but you're better off with subdomain).

4 Tips for Making Your WordPress Blog Search Engine-Friendly - Search Mojo

4 Tips for Making Your WordPress Blog Search Engine-Friendly - Search Mojo | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
You know what makes me cringe? Yes, Dance Moms. You know what else? Wordpress blogs that lack some of the easiest things to make them more search engine

Condensed...

1. Uncheck the uncategorized category

“Uncategorized” is the default category for WordPress blogs, but your posts should never be left uncategorized, looking completely random within your blog. When writing a blog post, always have an idea of your general topic in mind. Consider that broad idea your category. The categories are a great way to help both Google and readers of your blog understand the broad ideas of your blog and help navigate to related themes.

2. Update permalinks to include post titles

Too many times I’ve seen URLs for WordPress blog posts that look like this: http://www.myawesomeblog.com/?p=123 What’s the first thing you notice about this URL, compared to the URL of this very blog post you’re reading right now? Yes, instead of the post title, there’s a simple page number. This doesn’t tell search engines (or people, for that matter) what your post is about. The keywords used in your post title, body of your post, categories and URL are signals to search engines and help them to rank your blog posts. So it behooves you to change your permalinks to include your post titles.

3. Add keyword-focused titles and descriptions

WordPress will use your page or post title as the HTML page title tag, but will not include the meta-description or meta-keywords. To edit your post to include your focus keywords, I recommend using the All in One SEO Pack plugin to tackle this task.

4. Add social sharing buttons

You write great content, right? And you want increased traffic and inbound links, correct? Well, then make sure you have the option for your readers to easily share the blog post to their social networks! There are so many options for social sharing, but make sure you have the Google +1 button, Twitter tweet, Facebook like/share, and LinkedIn share. Depending on your content and audience, the Pin it button and other niche platforms might be relevant.

A New Plugin for WordPress Marketing Automation - WP Daily

A New Plugin for WordPress Marketing Automation - WP Daily | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Now there's an inexpensive WordPress marketing automation solution available. Managing and following up on leads has just gotten much easier.

Excerpt...

The ORBTR Plugin & Service

Marketing automation has come to WordPress and here’s how it works. As a developer, you install [the ORBTR] plugin, activate it, and enter the code you get from them when you sign up for the service. Then you go to your Gravity Forms (or Jet Pack forms) and activate the ones you care about. Then you navigate to its dashboard and watch the results.

I’ve had the plugin activated for two days (the weekend) and already am in love. As you can see, I can see how many page views (and can drill down into details) per form entrant I’ve had. I can link their behavior with their demographics.

And if you look on the left, you’ll notice ORBTR isn’t just for capturing leads. It offers landing page and mobile solutions (which I haven’t leveraged yet).

But what I really appreciate about what these guys have done is that they’ve not created their own outbound email infrastructure. Instead, they’ve integrated with MailChimp – so that I can put these leads into existing lists.
