Write a Standout Blog Post in 6 Easy Steps - ClickZ | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Focus on high-quality content that helps you build an audience while improving your personal online brand.

Condensed...

  1. Put some thought into your blog title. The title of your blog is your reader's first exposure to your piece. Devote some thought to it - you want to draw a reader in. Aim for titles that are brief, direct, and promise to deliver.
  2. Write a thought-provoking intro. Your title sparked the reader's interest, but the first few sentences are your chance to hook the reader. One strategy is to use questions relevant to your readership, as in "Have you ever…" or "When's the last time you…"
  3. Keep your body succinct and on-topic. Keep text brief and to the point. People are busy and want to access information without the distraction of superfluous words or a lack of organization. Also, pare back sentences and avoid words like "you should" or "consider," as such phrases often dilute your message.
  4. Don't blow off the closing. Use your closing to present the larger picture or broach another point worth considering. The closing is the place to address any tangents you didn't cover in the body of your article.
  5. Use images wisely. Images are essential components of standout blog posts, and can truly keep readers engaged.
  6. Add credible statistics. Cite relevant statistics throughout your post to back up your argument and lend credibility. Make sure the stats come from reliable resources, and always cite or quote them. The last thing you want is to spread misinformation or be accused of plagiarism.

5 Ways To Measure Blog Traffic - MarketingThink

5 Ways To Measure Blog Traffic - MarketingThink | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Get under the hood of your blog and use these 5 simple dials to measure the effectiveness of your blog traffic sources!

The five dials on your blogging traffic dashboard to measure your traffic are:

  • Paid Traffic. When you use Google Adwords, Facebook ads, targeted Ezine and offline classified ads to drive people directly to your blog, then you are managing paid traffic. Using paid media is an “instant on” approach to managing your blog traffic.
  • Referral Traffic: When your blog or blog post is noted on another website as link back to your site, count the amount of traffic that is driven.
  • Organic Traffic: When a visitor arrives at your blog by way of a search engine, from a Google or Yahoo search term (e.g., social media marketing coaching), this is organic traffic. This earned traffic is typically driven by high-quality content.
  • Direct Traffic: Direct traffic is when a someone lands on your blog as a result of typing in your URL.
  • Social Traffic: If your blog is the hub of your content wheel, then the social media channels are the spokes. When you create a blog post, you need to make sure all of your social media channels are used to spread the word. As your posts reach your followers, their followers (via retweets and shares) and others (who are searching on keywords and hashtags) you can drive more visits to your blog. Make sure to optimize every social media post to rank highly for each obscure long-tail key phrase.
Joemktg's insight:

That's it: that's the list. The biggie is the last one: having all your content driven from one hub (regardless of what your hub is). Take, for example, this post: it goes to my blog, Twitter, FB, LinkedIn, etc., all from one posting.

4 Tips for Making Your WordPress Blog Search Engine-Friendly - Search Mojo

4 Tips for Making Your WordPress Blog Search Engine-Friendly - Search Mojo | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
You know what makes me cringe? Yes, Dance Moms. You know what else? Wordpress blogs that lack some of the easiest things to make them more search engine

Condensed...

1. Uncheck the uncategorized category

“Uncategorized” is the default category for WordPress blogs, but your posts should never be left uncategorized, looking completely random within your blog. When writing a blog post, always have an idea of your general topic in mind. Consider that broad idea your category. The categories are a great way to help both Google and readers of your blog understand the broad ideas of your blog and help navigate to related themes.

2. Update permalinks to include post titles

Too many times I’ve seen URLs for WordPress blog posts that look like this: http://www.myawesomeblog.com/?p=123 What’s the first thing you notice about this URL, compared to the URL of this very blog post you’re reading right now? Yes, instead of the post title, there’s a simple page number. This doesn’t tell search engines (or people, for that matter) what your post is about. The keywords used in your post title, body of your post, categories and URL are signals to search engines and help them to rank your blog posts. So it behooves you to change your permalinks to include your post titles.

3. Add keyword-focused titles and descriptions

WordPress will use your page or post title as the HTML page title tag, but will not include the meta-description or meta-keywords. To edit your post to include your focus keywords, I recommend using the All in One SEO Pack plugin to tackle this task.

4. Add social sharing buttons

You write great content, right? And you want increased traffic and inbound links, correct? Well, then make sure you have the option for your readers to easily share the blog post to their social networks! There are so many options for social sharing, but make sure you have the Google +1 button, Twitter tweet, Facebook like/share, and LinkedIn share. Depending on your content and audience, the Pin it button and other niche platforms might be relevant.

Joemktg's insight:

This is one of those hands-on, must do types of articles. If you use WordPress, this post goes right into your to do list. Click through for the details on how to execute.

It's important! When we spend time culling through hundreds and hundreds of articles and posting each day, the first attention grabber is the Blog Title. Here's a quick review of the top points from this posting:

1. Focus on titles: For the Content Marketing Institute, we spend an average of 30 minutes per title in search of the absolute best wording.

2. Never write misleading titles just to get people to click

3. Find the right keyword

A Year’s Worth of Actionable Blogging Tips

A Year’s Worth of Actionable Blogging Tips | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Some really good stuff!...

Organize your projects, blog posts or anything else, with Trello.

My best tip for this year is to try Trello. I blogged about my use of this service in March and have used it more and more throughout the year. The bottom line is it uses a digital notecard format to organize anything.

Quickly research the social sharing of any page with SharedCount

SharedCount is basic analytics and research tool. It tells you how often an individual page has been shared across social networks. You aren’t going to be making indepth reports with this tool, but it is good for quick research.

Never make a blog post without an image.

People like images. Perhaps more importantly, social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn pull images from your blog whenever a post is shared. Don’t give up that space. You can create a text based images in minutes to take advantage of this with Recite This.

Fill in the blogging gaps by getting personalized news to inform your curation.

As much as I would like to blog about everything that peaked my interest, there isn’t enough time in the day. I am so inquisitive, I would need a couple extra days a week. Much of the gaps are filled by being active on different social media channels. For me that is Twitter. If you are going to find things to post about it, it helps to keep up on industry news.

Compose anywhere. Have access everywhere with Evernote.

I have found this year that Evernote ends up being where I put anything that isn’t in my email program or saved to Dropbox. My normal compisition pattern is to start in Trello to organize ideas, and then I craft longer posts and reports in Evernote. Read more about how I used Evernote to blog.

Some of the key ways to be able to differentiate your blog in 2013 and better grab precious blog reader mindshare.

2. Have a podcast from the very beginning.

3. Separate your writing style from others. Be you.

4. Don’t try to ‘do’ social media. Just communicate with people.

5. Write a short book.

6. Embrace video – it’s still your chance to be a pioneer

If you really look into the above points, what they all basically boil down to is ‘be everywhere and be authentic’.
