Android Wear's New Strategy For Success In The Apple Watch Era

Android Wear's New Strategy For Success In The Apple Watch Era | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

Although Apple hasn’t revealed any official sales numbers—and says it doesn’t plan to—several unofficial estimates claim that Apple has at least cracked the 1 million sales mark. Google's Android Wear platform only shipped 720,000 units in all of 2014, according to Canalys.

Just as it did with smartphones and tablets, Apple has essentially created the smartwatch market. But don't write off Android Wear just yet. Through a series of seemingly low-key changes, Google is quietly positioning itself for a stronger second act....

Just as it did with smartphones and tablets, Apple has essentially created the smartwatch market. But don't write off Android Wear just yet. Through a series of seemingly low-key changes, Google is quietly positioning itself for a stronger second act.  -  A few weeks ago, Google announced Android Wear 5.1.1, and while the version number doesn't suggest major improvements, the update will make third-party apps much more useful.  -   When Android Wear first launched, Google seemed to deliberately hide their launcher, preferring that app makers focus on actionable notifications. But developers say Google may have gotten ahead of itself with that plan.  -  "My guess is they went a bit too fast going notification-only, and they found users are confused by the lack of structure," says Q42 developer Taco Ekkel, who created an app for controlling Philips Hue lightbulbs. "The notification-instead-of-apps model is the future, but people (both users and many app developers) need time to get there."

Hands On With The Moto 360, The First Round Smart Watch | TechCrunch

Hands On With The Moto 360, The First Round Smart Watch | TechCrunch | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

As we approach Peak Smart Watch at the Apple event next week, manufacturers are racing to offer product to those who might not want to bow down to Cupertino in the coming months. The latest contender is the Moto 360, a steel and leather beauty that launched today alongside the new Motorola .

Although I’ve been duly impressed by the Samsung Gear series, you will immediately see that the design language of the 360 is far more chic. Made of a round piece of coated steel and featuring a nice leather band and Gorilla Glass crystal, the watch looks more like a Misfit Shine than a nerd accouterment.

How does it work? Well, if you’re not familiar with the vagaries of Android Wear, not very well at first. The interface consists of notifications that appear over the various watch faces available as well as a voice activated screen that allows you to ask for various pieces of information....

Report says Apple 'fanboys' will make the iWatch an incredible success

Report says Apple 'fanboys' will make the iWatch an incredible success | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

The smartwatch market is dominated by Samsung, followed by Sony and Pebble, according to a mid-May Strategy Analytics report, but that may change as soon as Apple’s rumored iWatch launches.

Obtained by Forbes, a new research note from Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty reveals that Apple’s ecosystem strength and consumer loyalty are going to drive an incredible amount of sales in the first year alone.

Citing data from AlphaWise, Huberty says that Apple’s brand loyalty continues to grow and that, thanks to its integrated ecosystem of devices and the “halo effect,” Apple may be able to sell more than 30 million iWatch units in the first 12 months, for $300 a pop. iWatch sales would bring in an extra $9 billion in revenue, and $0.49 EPS – that’s the “worst case” scenario, with the stock seen driving up to $110 as a result.

In the “bull case,” Huberty sees Apple selling 60 million smartwatches in the first year, with stock hitting $132 by the same time next year....

Pebble CEO: We won't be chasing Apple down the 'fashion' route - Telegraph | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it
Pebble will not be following Apple down the 'fashion' route, according to founder and CEO Eric Migicovsky, with the company preferring to concentrate on making smartwatches that are useful and cost-effective.

Speaking to The Telegraph, following the launch of the Pebble smartwatch in the UK earlier this month, Migicovsky said that simplicity and affordability are two of the main reasons people buy Pebble watches....

Apple Has Considered $400 Price for Wearable Device

Apple Has Considered $400 Price for Wearable Device | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

Pricing has yet to be finalized for the forthcoming product, which is expected to begin shipping next year. Sources say consumers should expect a range of prices for different models including lower priced versions. It is not immediately clear if the price will be settled in time for Apple’s Sept. 9 press conference when it is expected to introduce the new iPhones and announce a wearable device. Apple declined to comment.

The introduction of a wearable product would mark Apple’s first entry into a new device category since the 2010 introduction of the iPad. As with tablets, Apple aims to redefine an existing, albeit young, category currently populated by Jawbone and Fitbit, which make fitness bands, and other smartphone makers Samsung, LG, Motorola and Timex, which have waded into the burgeoning smart watches business....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Apple's high-end wearable will be among the most expensive of the category. I think consumers will pay the price if the design meets Apple's usual high standards.

...Apple appears confident of the new product. According to a parts manufacturer, it plans monthly commercial output of about 3-5 million units, which exceeds the total global sales of watch-like devices last year.

This confidence is backed by its partnerships with high-profile hospitals — it has teamed up with the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic, U.S. health institutes based in Minnesota and Ohio, respectively, to develop specific ways of analyzing the collected data and applying it to actual health management....

Jack Dorsey Believes The iWatch Will Be More Valuable To Users Than Google Glass | Cult of Mac

Jack Dorsey Believes The iWatch Will Be More Valuable To Users Than Google Glass | Cult of Mac | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

When asked whether he’s looked into Google Glass, Dorsey had the following to say:“I don’t think glasses are the answer. I think it might be a 10-year answer, but not in the next five years. Maybe if they’re in sunglasses or what not. I think the movement you see around Fitbit, Up and FuelBand, that seems to be the next step in wearable. So something on the wrist that feels natural, almost feels a bit like jewelry. Glasses are very compelling and I think it’s an amazing technology, but I just can’t imagine my mom wearing them right now. What is the value of Glass?”

Google Glass was announced last year at Google’s I/O developer conference but the consumer version of the product isn’t expected to be released until the end of 2013, or a year-ish from now, depending on who you talk to. Apple has yet to announce its rumored iWatch product, but some rumors have pointed to a late 2013 or early 2014 release date.

When asked specifically, whether he had more faith in the rumored iWatch, Dorsey replied: ”(Laughs.) I don’t know, I think there’s a lot going on. The Pebble watch I think is pretty compelling as well.”...

Google Glass or Apple iWatch? Interesting debate, guaranteed to go on forever.
