Philips Just Made It Stupid Simple to Install Smarthome Lighting

Philips Just Made It Stupid Simple to Install Smarthome Lighting | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

A lot of intelligent people believe that a platform like Apple’s HomeKit will be the way we control the smart home of the future. But I'd bet on it looking a lot more like the new wireless dimming kit from the Philips Hue line—subtle technology that eliminates the need for electricians and apps at the same time.

Each kit runs $40, and it includes a white Hue bulb and a dimming remote. All you have to do is screw in the bulb to install it - and up to ten others can piggyback on this same network. The remote uses the ZigBee radio protocol to control them in tandem, and it promises to last a minimum of three years, or 50,000 uses, before it needs its battery replaced....

It’s the Summer of the Smart Home: Is Your Home Ready?

It’s the Summer of the Smart Home: Is Your Home Ready? | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

It’s only the beginning of July, but already this season is turning out to be the summer of home automation. Let’s call it the summer of smart homes, because that sounds better.

In the past few weeks the number of significant DIY smart home announcements has been a little overwhelming. You’d think that with all the apps and wireless devices hitting the market, that by September the act of manually turning on a light switch will be as uncool as Crocs (OK, I still wear my Crocs)...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

New smart home systems are getting better and more affordable. Will the DIY market finally take off?

SmartThings Review: Living in the Smart Home

SmartThings Review: Living in the Smart Home | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

Prepare to hear a lot more about SmartThings. Kickstarter success turned Samsung acquisition, the smart home startup isn't the only DIY approach to home automation and security out there, but it may well end up being one of the best funded. SmartThings' mantra is one of openness, aiming to work with as many third-party components as possible rather than lock users into a closed platform. Admirable, but it could easily add up to confusion; I've been living the SmartThings life for the past six months to see whether it works.

We've come a long way in home automation. What once was solely the preserve of the rich, demanding expensive installation or - if foresight had been lacking during construction - even more expensive retrofitting, has transitioned to a new age of plug & play components, cross-platform connectivity, and the sort of DIY-friendliness that makes setting it up yourself straightforward....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

DIY and plug 'n play will propel the smart home marketplace.

Chipmaker MediaTek taps into connected home appliance market | FT.com | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek plans to tap into the growing market for connected home appliances and wearable products with technology designed to help make devices for the so-called “internet of things”.

The company will make its first step into the market for connected home products, with components to support devices from connected fridges and TVs to cameras, smart bulbs, plugs and locks.

MediaTek has also developed a separate software platform to open its technology for developers of wearable technology such as connected watches and jewellery, another nascent “internet of things” market....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Wearables and the smart home market seem on a path to convergence.
