IDC wearables analysis: Fitbit continues to lead way amid alarming Apple decline | Internet of Things & Wearable Technology Insights | Scoop.it

The latest figures from IDC show Fitbit continues to lead the way in global wearable device sales, but Apple slides alarmingly down the table.


According to the most recent Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker analysis, Fitbit sold 5.3 million units in Q316, up from 4.8m this time last year, while the company’s overall market share has risen to 23.0% from 2.14% in Q315.


This rise can partly be attributed to Apple’s relative demise. With 3.9m units shipped in the third quarter of 2015, Cupertino held second place and a market share of 17.5%, yet this year it has fallen to 1.1m, fourth place overall, and a year over year growth of -71%. Xiaomi and Garmin, with 3.8m and 1.3m units respectively in Q316, have the silver and bronze medals and show modest growth year on year....

Between April and June, 18.1 million wearable devices were shipped around the world according to IDC's estimates.  Despite the arrival of strong competitors such as Apple and Xiaomi, Fitbit has retained the lead in the global wearables market in Q2 of 2015. Marking its foray into the crowded wristband fitness tracker space, Garmin launched at CES 2014 the vivofit, a waterproof device that learns a user's fitness habits and sets different daily goals. Unlike most competing wristband trackers that require a recharge after seven to 10 days, the company promises a full year's worth of battery on one charge, thanks to two user-replaceable coin cell batteries.The vivofit aims to go head to head with other fitness wristband trackers such as the Nike+ Fuelband SE, the Fitbit Force and the Jawbone Up. It will come in five flavors — black, purple, teal, blue and slate — and in two sizes: small and large. The vivofit ships in the first quarter of 2014 and costs $129.99. A bundle with a heart-rate monitor will also be available for $169.99, allowing users to get more accurate calorie-burn information while working out....

Building upon a study performed in 2014, PwC launched the 2016 Consumer Intelligence Series report on wearables to better understand the wearable technology consumption landscape and identify trends in the industry to unearth potential opportunities and applications. We sampled 1,000 US consumers via an online survey to explore consumer behavior and preferences towards wearables.


This research primarily focused on the attitudes consumers have towards wearable technology, as well as an in depth look at penetration and usage of various types of devices. Additionally, we explored the benefits and underlying motivations behind usage and how it impacts both individuals and society....

YouGov estimates that there will be 6.1 million wearable device owners in the UK by the end of 2015 and Juniper research predicts that wearable devices will generate $53.2 billion in global retail revenue by 2019. So what does this growing area of technology mean for marketers and their relationships with customers?


What’s interesting is that out of all of the wearable devices, smartwatches are expected to generate the highest adoption and spur the trend. Smartwatches are expected to replace fitness devices as the most purchased wearables category by 2017. Apple is the latest tech giant to make a play in this market and recently unveiled an update to its Apple Watch where third party apps can now be downloaded in isolation from the iPhone. Recently voted top of the ‘CoolBrands’ list, it’s likely that Apple’s foray into the smartwatch market will drive consumers to lust after the wearable tech trend....

If you're dubious whether the prefix "smart" can be slapped on any more product names, prepare to be flabbergasted: MIT Media Lab researcherDhairya Dand has invented smart insoles that help guide you through the urban sprawl without once consulting a map.


Dand calls them SuperShoes, though they aren't really shoes at all. Dand's invention is a microcontroller, Bluetooth module, and what Dand is calling "vibrotactile ticklers"--all merged into a flexible silicon insole. You can slip them into any pair of chucks to make your sneakers smart.

In January, one survey showed more than half of consumers were interested in buying wearable technology. Even our own editor-in-chief admits he has been “bit by the wearable technology bug.” So it’s no surprise that the Nielsen’s Connected Life Report found recently one in six people who know about wearables are now actually wearing them....
